Metro Exodus - Sam's Story

Its roughly 5 hours and filled with content on a new map, the story is great aswell as its environment, this is one of those games where you will likely revisit another day just to try out different ways of going about it, wholeheartedly would recommend this dlc.

I had a great time with this expansion: it introduced a new, open-worldish map and it continued with the strengths of the main game - good characters, interesting story and a really immersive world. I actually enjoyed it so much that I completed it twice already to see what I missed in the first run. Man, seriously, just sitting down in this post-apocalyptic world to play some country songs on the harmonica was already a great moment for me. However, I got this DLC with the Metro Exodus Gold edition so I didn't purchase it separately. Had I done that, I would have found the price to be too high. 10 EUR/USD would have been a better price.

This DLC aims to give a final adventure for the American ranger Sam. As the DLC starts you will notice that Sam already took a long journey as his ammunition are at the minimum. But, s now is truly near of getting his ticket to home. The gameplay of the DLC is basically the same as the OC. You will play in a huge area that would give the impression of being quite open. However, it is very lineal. As you advance on the main quests you will lose access to previous areas. And you will find a lot of invisible walls in the initial parts of the DLC. As a complement, you have a new type of ammunition that will help you greatly on the DLC. If you can use It wisely and do enough exploration for collecting it. With exception of the gargoyle that wants to eat Sam, most of the characters are non-unidimensional. There is no black & white for the main antagonist of the DLC. And frankly, Sam will need to make a big choice at the end of the game, one well driven by the history.

Unlike the Two Colonels, which is mostly cinematic sequences and on-the-rails gameplay, Sam's Story gives you a nice big world to work with, some great mission sequences, and some of the best combat in the whole franchise. If you're pinching pennies and trying to decide between the DLC, this is the one to get. It's not perfect, and the story ends somewhat unsatisfyingly, but the campaign proper is just endless fun. Be prepared for some tough batwing encounters though! Didn't die in this campaign except for the batwing battles.

You play as the American Marine, Sam, looking for a way home in the city of Vladivostok. The story never strays far from that theme and never gets more exciting than that. On the other hand, the gameplay is superb. If you want more of Metro Exodus' mix of shooting and steath, this is probably better than any comparable sized part of the main game. There is a lot of varied action. Mixed in there are also a couple of first-person in-engine cutscenes, including a fantastic one of Sam in CQB with several mercenaries. And the in-game city actually looks like the real city. I almost give this five stars. Two things hold it back. One: boring boss fights with the same boss, not once, not twice, but three times. Two: Sam feels too much like an outsider. I couldn't find any emotional truth when playing the DLC. Coming from the main game where despite being a peaceful person, I meticulously killed every last cannibal I could get my hands on for hurting Anna, the lack of emotional investment was disconcerting. I just couldn't care if Sam got home or not.
