I find the slow-downs of the metal slug ports on gog to be OK. I would have preferred an option to run the game smooth, but having the original slowdowns has its charm. BUT, this port of metal slug on gog has the worst slow-downs, so it is hard to recommend it to other, especially when metal slug X is basically metal slug 2, that run smoother.
The game is good. I remember a lot of the levels for this game but it’s still not the exact same game that I played many years ago. It is still an amazing game and good game.
The Good
There are a couple new vehicles that you can use. It’s cool.
The graphics are great.
The sounds are good.
The special effects are cool.
You can play as any of the 4 characters.
There are unique npc animations happening in the background. They really aren’t anything special but it’s cool.
There’s new enemies and they are really interesting. I would have loved to have known more lore about them.
You can infinitely respawn.
There are a couple options in the menu. Like, you can turn on auto-fire in the menu.
You can turn the video filter off. But I must admit, it does look good with it on. It has a certain nostalgia feel to it.
The game was easy and short.
Every level is a new set piece.
The Bad
The game slows down. This is the worst slowdown that I played yet for this series. Clearly the emulator is causing this. I do not remember metal slug being this slow on the ps1 when I was a kid. And there is no way that they released this game back in the day with such a crappy performance. I guess the old devs who made these games have long since left the company.
It appears that they removed the ability to play the game online with your friends.
Conclusion
I enjoyed the game of course, and it is nice to be revisiting the series after all these years. I always wanted to have these games when I was younger and now I can with it being on gog.
Sure, you can get it on steam but you can’t keep the games on your separate hard drive for safe keeping. The only one missing on gog is XX, which is strange. I do not know why it isn’t available on gog when the rest are.
Anyways, love the game, despite its huge flaw which is performance.
To begin with this game was designed to squize your pockets dry in the arcades, so be prepared that you'll get a lot unfair moments, but never the less the game is good for 1-2 evenings, but there is some performance issues.
Like it. It is kind of tricky to get working right without preformence drop. All you have to do is set up your resolution - set it high if you wish play sceenwide or set it low if you want to play among other apps. Do not turn full screen feature when you have set full hd res because THAT will cause preformence drop. Other than that - it is fantastic. I will ask my friends to play Metal Slug 2 with me, I will gift them this game. Net play is enjoyment in itself - as you might know of it.
