It is the year 2030 A.D. With the recent advancements in information technology and neuroscience in Japan, human memories can now be saved and recorded via a technology called "e-Memory." Numerous state-operated facilities now exist that will allow one to communicate with the deceased: the "Connect Center."

College student Kusuhara Hiroki struggles with suicidal impulses after the sudden passing of his close childhood friend, Mizunashi Sorano. With her memories to last only six days, Kusuhara’s friend Amamiya Kakeru suggests that they attempt to steal Sorano’s memories from the server in which they are stored. So many questions left unanswered...

I liked it. A lot. I definitely want to see more of this. As to this part (it was supposed to be a trilogy) alone it took me seven hours to read through it, so it's not one of the "quickies" you're finished with in under two hours, but then I was taking my time letting the animations finish rather than speed reading so I'm sure you can blow through this MUCH faster than I did if you work at it. I'm kinda torn on the recommendation front since I don't even see a projected release date for the second or third part. If this keeps going I'll definitely be picking up the rest of it, and recommending others take a look at it as well, but I'm kinda paranoid about how many things just end without ever finishing the story. The only complaint I have is that they could *REALLY* do with toning down the fight scenes. They try too hard to describe them and it doesn't work quite as well as I think they thought it would. It ends up seeming overly verbose, not that relevant, and distracts from the story. Tone them down, don't over-narrate the fights, and the only thing wrong with this chapter will be infinitely better in the other two parts. Four stars for an interesting story and decent length, only losing one for the aforementioned fight scenes being excessively wordy to the point of being annoying, but they're a small part of the VN so it's mostly something you can ignore as it's not a Victor Hugo level of excessive details throughout the entire story.

Pretty good sci-fi VN, but...

Overall, Memory's Dogma: Code 01 is a pretty good sci-fi visual novel. Your name is Kusuhara Hiroki, and your high school friend recently died in a car accident. Fortunately, an organization called JCO has stored her memories, which are available for access until the end of the month. Unfortunately, inconsistencies in these memories lead you down a rabbit hole of conspiracy and assassination as you attempt to uncover her true cause of death. Honestly, I'm not sure why Japanese RPGs and VNs seem to enjoy turning every story into a conspiracy to take over the world and doom humanity, but that's what happens here, and -- as common in stories like this -- the seemingly hard sci-fi of the initial story gives way to a much less scientifically plausible one. Oh well. ... This game is supposed to be episodic, so don't expect all of your questions to be answered through Code 01 itself, but at least the story can stand on its own if needed. Story aside... there are only five significant choices, with one "true" ending and four "bad" endings, so if you like your VNs with branching storylines this won't be for you. Illustrations and music are reasonably high quality; the voice overs (Japanese only) are quite good. All in all, worth a go if you're interested in sci-fi.

A review from 2025...

It's been 9 years since this game was initially released... Since then, this series, which was meant to be a trilogy, has been canceled, leaving only this first entry to ever be completed. That said... what is it like? Let me first assure you that the story of this game stands well on its own, and while it leaves some open questions at the end, it can be enjoyed by itself without issue. => Story Starting off as a mystery at the beginning, we follow our protagonist "Hiroki", as he seeks to investigate the mysterious death of a close friend, as well as find answers to the somewhat strange behavior she exhibited shortly prior. As we approach the mid-section of the game, we experience a tone shift into more of a mystery-thriller, when the protagonist's attention is turned towards a strange criminal who appeared in the city, and the reasons behind this person's behavior. Finally, nearing the end, the game turns into a full-on thriller, when Hiroki begins to find out many truths behind what had been happening. Most of the characters were interesting, likable, and behaving generally in a believable fashion. At this point, I would've given 4 stars, but... => Ending (no spoilers) By far the weakest element in the story will have to be the ending, in which the antagonists simply info-dump their motivations onto Hiroki. While not particularly elegant, this itself wouldn't be so bad, but as it turns out their motivations are so contradictory and, in the case of one of them, flat-out out of character, that they appear to have been a complete afterthought for the writers. In addition, there is a detailed, roughly 1-hour-long sequence in which a person is getting tortured, which adds very little to the story and cannot be avoided - something I found to be in rather poor taste, and I was close to abandoning this game during it. (Though it can be fast-forwarded through, and the game continues afterwards). Overall, it's good, but I find the ending to be poorly written.
