Description

Melon Journey: Bittersweet Memories puts you in the shoes of Honeydew, a bunny headband-wearing employee of a melon soda factory who's on a mission to find her recently missing best friend. But is it really that safe traveling to a town where melon possession can land you in the slammer? And why is there a hamster so preoccupied with sneaking into the Kitten King's castle?

Uncover the mystery in this latest story-exploration game from developer Froach Club. Explore a charming, pixelated world - filled to the brim with eccentric characters, criminals, and a plot as weird as it is cute.

Features:
Mystery at Every Turn
Comb every inch of Hog Town to collect clues, trail shady characters, and sneak your way through the seedy underworld, using your keen observational skills and quick wit to piece together the whole picture before it’s too late.

Silly Characters with Intricate Backstories
While looking for your missing friend, you’ll encounter dozens of curious creatures with unique personalities and sometimes tragic backstories, adding additional mysteries for completionists to unravel.

Jazzy Lo-Fi Soundtrack
While you’re on the case, enjoy more than 90 different electronic and jazz-inspired tracks from composer markeryjane.

Gorgeous Retro-Style Graphics
The green-tinted, monochrome world is filled with loving detail, a nostalgic ode to the classic handheld generation with plenty of modern twists.

Having a Good Time with It!

You could either say it's an RPG without a battle system, or a Point-and-Click game that's designed to look and play like a traditional, 2D RPG with a top-down view. Walk around, explore, talk to characters, and figure out where to go and what to do. The game is most focused on its plotline, and telling its story. Honeydew, and some of her friends, work at a Melon Soda factory; her best friend disappears, and she decides to go looking for him. In your adventure, you'll come across a political campaign (legalize melons!), a street gang, and a mice cult; you even go through the slums at one point. The humor is cynical and ironic, like they're aiming for the Undertale demographic. I'm digging the lo-fi/chiptune jazz-styled soundtrack, and the retro green, monochromatic visuals! If you'd just like dispense with challenge and focus on an immersive world and plotline for a change, you can do a lot worse than Melon Journey: Bittersweet Memories.

Needs some polish

Technical: The game feels like a port from the Nintendo Switch. You can't change the sound volume or the language ingame. The language depends on your system settings. It can't be played with the controller alone, as at least in the beginning you need the keyboard for entering your characters names. Otherwise the controller support is fine. Translation: I played part of it in English and the other in German. I felt like the German translation missed a lot of the puns. It wasn't too bad, but it broke the immersion. Story and Gameplay: The gameplay is fine: walking around and interacting with people and objects. It is an exploration game and as this type it works well. The characters are well written and have a defined personality. The NPC dialogues are funny and help immerse you in the world. However, I never had the feeling that the goal that the game wants you to achieve was clear. There is the basic goal to find your friend, but the story feels like it's loosing itself in sidequests. It felt like I'm just watching a story unfold rather than influencing anything. Furthermore, it is pretty streamlined: there is only one option the game wants you to find to progress. Soundtrack: The soundtrack is enjoyable and fits the gamestyle. Graphics: It has the green retro look, which is fitting for the retro style and feel. Overall the game is okay. It has a playtime of about 5h. It was a nice but flawed trip due to the missing menu options and translation.
