Description
From the creator of Big Pharma comes a brand new economic simulation game. Megaquarium follows in the footsteps of classic theme park management tycoon games and adds an aquatic spin!

A living simulation

Starting with just a few tanks and the most basic of livestock, you’ll grow your aquarium to a thronging metropolis filled with hundreds of guests, tens of staff and a multitude of different aquatic lifeforms, each with their own unique care requirements.

Design your exhibits

Megaquarium features almost 100 different marine species including fish, sharks, crustaceans, corals, jellyfish, other invertebrates and even a turtle! You’ll be spoilt for choice as you design, decorate and populate your tanks.

The right staff for the job

You won’t get far without the right staff. Choose who to hire based on their skills and future potential. Will you train up a team of multi-disciplined staff or a set of super-focussed experts? You’ll have to weigh up the pros and cons of each strategy and work out what is right for your aquarium.

Research new animals and technology

As guests experience your displays you’ll earn points which you can assign to discovering new livestock and equipment. Keep upgrading and expanding your aquarium and work your way up to the most prestigious animals and displays in the aquarium industry.

Manage your finances

The latest fish might look cool, but have you considered its impact on your aquarium’s bottom line. Tricky animals may require new staff to be hired, expensive fish food or supplements and the best tanks are a hefty investment! As aquarium curator you’ll need to master creativity and economics to succeed.

Manage your guests!

Keep your guests happy by providing them with seating, food, drinks and toilet facilities. Then at the end of their visit, direct them through the gift shop to boost your profits!

Curator school

Start your career in the campaign mode where you’ll learn everything you need to know about designing and managing an aquarium. Each of the 10 levels challenges you to build an aquarium with unique gameplay conditions and objectives, while new features and concepts are explained along the way.

Dive into the sandbox

Next explore sandbox mode where, with customisable settings and a random challenge generator, you can find virtually unlimited fish-related gameplay!

Easy to learn, difficult to master

Running an inefficient aquarium is easy. To really thrive and take on the greatest challenges you’ll need a lateral thinking brain and attention to detail. Will you group your animals by food type, water quality or something else entirely? Will you locate your equipment in a centralised hub using pumps or spread them out embracing the zoning system? How will you optimise your layout so that visitors can find your tanks and staff can easily access them?

Every decision you make in Megaquarium has consequences. Your choice of animals, filters, tanks, staff and layout all have subtle and far reaching effects on each other. Experiment, adjust, learn, reapply and most importantly, have fun!

Features

  • 10 level ‘learn the game’ campaign
  • Sandbox mode with full customisation and random challenge generator
  • 97 species of livestock to discover each with their own unique care requirements
  • Over 100 different objects to place including filters, skimmers, nitrate reactors, chillers, heaters, food boxes, equipment stations, doors, gates, food and drink dispensers, balloon stands, decorations, paint and more!
  • Plan staff talks down to the subject, time and frequency to increase your point income even further!
  • Gift shop and guest facilities
  • Fully featured theming and decoration system

A solid and charming tycoon game, but...

This game has a good amount of charm and a fairly relaxed atmosphere, and I would recommend it to people looking for a relaxing tycoon game. There's an interesting puzzle in filling up each tank with a variety fish that won't murder each other so you can save floor space and maximize points over time. But that is the only real challenge in the game, beyond that there's not much in the way of threats to completing the campaign once you understand the basics. A noticable irritant is the interface which could use some fine tuning, despite working. My main issue is that there are no obvious ways to filter the various fish. Late in the game you're stuck with a large scrolling list, which can be tiresome to wade through when trying to find something that would fit in a particular tank. Especially since the list doesn't keep tropical and cold water fish seperate. The one other thing that annoys me is the final campaign mission, which is just a slog to get through. It's not difficult in the least, it just takes a lot of time to grind the various points you need to research new fish or equipment as well as getting to each new tier. It feels like it was set up that way becuase they felt the game needed to have a certain minimum amount of hours worth of campaign. But beyond those complaints, I recommend the game as a quite fun and relaxing experience. I do not regret buying or playing it, and I'll likely dig it out from time to time when I just want to tinker for a bit.

Terrific management sim

I had high hopes for this, because a) I love management sims, and b) I'm a marine conservationist and therefore a bit biased towards marine animals - I have a large tank at home where I breed endangered fish, and I spend a lot of time around the National Marine Aquarium in Plymouth, England. So I was immediately drawn to Megaquarium when I saw it on GOG. It doesn't disappoint. I started playing yesterday. I've already logged over 10 hours in the game. It's absurdly addictive. Visually it's quite simple, but the actual management sim gameplay is very involved, a clear refinement on the style of gameplay from games like Theme Park and Theme Hospital (though don't expect the latter's humour here). I'm also very impressed by the way it reflects actual aquarium management, with a huge number of species who have very specific, specialist requirements. That's surprisingly realistic. There's enough challenge to prevent things getting dull, but it doesn't overwhelm either. This is the perfect game to relax with. I can't recommend it enough.

Missing a few quality-of-life features

Right now, I'd say this game ranks about a 3.5, but since GOG doesn't allow reviews to have their star-ratings changed after the fact, and the dev has actively been updating this game since launch, I'm giving it the four-stars now. What's fun: *Micro-managing Staff. You can tell them what to do first, and even if there's a specific section of the aquarium that they need to remain in. *I get a kick out of zooming the camera in so that I'm merged into the water. It's soothing to just watch your fish swim around you. (Reminds me a bit of some of the old "living" screen savers.) *There is structure to stop things from getting overwhelming too quickly, but you still have a fair amount of choice in what you want to research, and when. It allows you to build your own aquarium without having ready access to livestock and tech that would make goals in the early levels laughably easy. What could be improved: * The main features missing that would make life easier (other than fixing the abysmal loading time when you boot up the game, are related to sorting. Example: if you want to make a tank with fish over a certain size, or hot/cold water or wimp/bully fish, there is no way to filter that out. If I could select a tank and it would slowly take away any options that would conflict with any creatures within the thank, that would remove loads of frustration I have with the game. * Some sort of chart to see what skills your existing Staff have would be amazing as well. As it stands, there isn't even an easy way to quickly check each Staff member individually. There is a set amount of windows the game will let you have open at once before it stops you. So you are often forced to open one window, then close it just so you can open another. * Finally, when a fish grows, there is no way to zoom to its tank. I've lost count of the times I had a growth report, thought I'd ensured nothing was at risk of getting eaten only for an Autopsy Report to appear a minute later.

S'alright

The game has a steady progression and the management of tanks is surprisingly in-depth. Making sure all your little aquatic critters are placed in such a way that they get the environment they like and the tank-mates they like ends up being a puzzle with oddly shaped blocks, and figuring out which go together well rewards those that can pay attention. Meanwhile you are trying to make some buck so you can keep expanding, and while simply having fish is enough to get through the game you can do a lot better with some strategic use of merchandise and consumables. The only significant negative I'd give this game in terms of gameplay is that it really lacks an endgame. Once you've unlocked all the toys there's not really a reason to use them beyond your own personal enjoyment. You still can, but I would have liked a gameplay reason. Overall, it's pretty alright.

Unwind in this Aquarium Management Sim

This game is truly a hidden gem. In my library full of violent and/or frenetic action games, Megaquarium is the soothing respite I never knew I needed. The best part is that it's actually relatively accurate with how many of these animals behave and interact IRL. I used to own 3 aquariums: 2 tropical fish/reef aquariums with corals, anemones, and various tropical fish, and 1 fresh water aquarium. Most of the perks with none of the cost or stress of running an actual aquarium, sign me up!
