It is hilarious that I still have muscle memory from this game, 1 for pistol, 2 for rifle etc.
Anyway I had a blast treating this game almost like run-n-gun; knowing where every enemy is on Easy difficulty, it's not too hard.
The game is showing its age especially through its AI --- it's a hypersensitive aimbot, and sometimes it's frustrating how easily alerted it is. But if you are able to look past that, then blast away
While the first game was good and did start the WW2 shooter period (which later evolved into the modern shooter period), people are forgetting that it's two expansions were short, brought few new things (usually, it was an extra gun or two) and all suffered from the same issue: you were mostly alone.
The moments in which you actually had friendlies next to you were few and far between, and if they died you were left by yourself for the rest of the mission. And they died, since the AI rarely used cover. This meant that most of the time you were alone, fighting the Axis all by yourself while some battle ambient sound was trying to assure you that the Allies aren't pulling a fast one on you. It never really felt epic.
In fact, Call of Duty's initial motto was "In war, no one fights alone", being a direct competitor to MoH.
Overall, it's not bad. If you really wanna feel of WW2, however, I recommend the first Call of Duty games (CoD1's expansion was the best, in my opinion, with the winter trench battles), or Brothers in Arms.
In The basic form of this game on GOG you will not play multiplayer. I spent a little time to finde solution on this problem. Here you have it:

Many levels are set in the open, which is nice. Levels are huge and varied with nice weather effects. Buildings and interiors are very well designed and decorated, villages in ruins look fantastic. Nature does not look as good, with corridors between walls of vegetation. Even Hidden & Dangerous 1 had better so-called forests. Although the game uses the Quake 3 engine, it is a little more realistic. Reloading takes ages, and you cannot run under heavy fire, even on the easiest mode.
Major qualities include shootings that feel epic and convey a strange feeling of realism. The major battle scenes of Saving Private Ryan are faithfully reenacted, with excerpts from the movie soundtrack. When I came across stolen papers, a disguise and alarms, I feared there would be stealth levels. There are no, the player can choose its strategy to complete levels, which is great.
As for the downsides, the absence of blood looks weird. The D-Day mission is extremely short, I wish I played longer on the beach. The interface could have listed all levels (as in many other games) instead of auto-saving at checkpoints, which results in an endless list of saves.
As for most of these "fanboy" written 5 star OMG OMG OMG this game is just sex. Gives me cheepies in my panties. Just Ignore them. And that's at least 95% of all the reviews written here.
This game just IS NOT THAT GOOD!!!!!
Overall is it only a "fair to middling" game. Far short of what I expected from the progenitor of such a long and successful series of later releases!!!!!
I'll just give the pros and cons:-
Pros
- Storyline and other game texts are very well written
- Mission design is mostly well done
- The program is stable, not had a crash to desktop once on my PC..... yet......
- This edition seems the definitive version with all the official addons bundled in
Cons
- 3D GFX engine is below par, even for 2002..... I mean, in that year Half Life 2 was well on it's way - and it had 20x better 3D on it! MOH:AA is more comparable to the like of late 90's games such as Half Life 1, Unreal, Quake 2 etc
- Also a LOT of glitches in those GFX too - possibly due to issues with such an old engine running on such a modern PC, maybe not something found back when the game was new
- The SFX engine is flawed, distant enemies sometimes sound as if they're right on top you!
- exceptions to the well designed missions exist..... such as the D-Day Beach Landing and mission set near Brest (Mission 5) with all the totally invisible snipers. You WILL need to cheat on those - even on Easy - which normally is WAY too easy!!!!!
- others missions go for the utterly lame and infuriating trick of spawning enemies from thin air, behind you and at close range..... I HATE THAT!!!!!
- you can't reach many seemingly open areas, seemingly gentle slopes are impassible, open roads and doorways have invisible forcefields
- your squad mates AI is AWFUL - there AI is really just "if enemy seen then run right at them with willies in hand and shout shoot my dong please", which is problem when mission criteria mandates they don't get their dongs shot off.....
Get the cheats, You WILL need them!
