MOO1 is one of the games I keep going back to.
It is just so easy to sit there and keep saying just one more turn.
With dosbox it works on just about anything and takes up next to no room on a flash drive.
Yes both of these games equally fall into the best game of all time category. If you have yet to play either then pick these up and play! Their open ended sand box play provides for countless hours of enjoyment building your civilization and then setting out to conquer stars and learn the mysteries of the galaxy.
It is one of the three games that make my youth: Master of Orion, Civilization and Lords of the Realms (with Centurion and Panzer General a bit behind)
Beware, this game will suck hours of your life! Technically you could just hop from time to time and play a little turn here and there, the game surely can work like that. But the temptation to do just another one will creep in, always, every turn.
Very good turn-based strategy game, offering a wide array of gameplay: I have won the game as a war monger, a pacifist, by the sheer awesomeness of my spies, by being a small, single solar system, race so technologically advanced that nobody could touch me and I could drop all my alliances and take over the vast empires all around me: the game is highly re-playable.
Master of orion was released in 1993. Most of the game is done on one screen and it has little to no story. However it is the best 4X game of all time. The game will keep you playing for hours on end untill you conquer the galaxy or are defeated by one of your opponents. It's really hard to explain why this game is so amazing, it just is. So go ahead and buy it, you won't be dissapointed.
