Still Playing the Original MOO2!

LOVE this game. Now available on GOG? Buying soon; here's why: Playing levels from Easy to Impossible Galaxy size from Small to Huge Opponents from 1 to 7 (Opponents selected randomly; you never know who you are up against until contact made.) Multiple game play options at start-up Race selection unlimited. Customize your selected race anyway you wish within reasonable limits. Great diplomats to belligerent xenophobes, smart scientist to hapless developers, mighty warriors or spy-heavy tacticians. You select the trade-offs - play with the consequences. Technical advancement - where to specialize, what to sacrifice? Or start the game as a "develop-everything" race but at the cost of . . . well, you decide. Replayability? UNLIMITED!! Re-read the above PLUS every game starts with a randomly generated galaxy map. The only constant are the star names; their planetary systems are always different. Example, Humans always start on Sol; but, Sol changes locations in the Galaxy at start up and the number and type of planets in the system varies. Your home planet can change based on your starting options (rich planet, larger planet, more/less population etc). Opponents for each game vary, as do their start locations. No game is ever the same. Never! Ways to win: Grind your opponents into dust. Win the Galactic Council vote. Interdimensional travel to the Antarian homeworld to defeat the Antarrians. (Note, this is the only battle where the attacker, you, does not go first so attack with a massively strong force.) Cons: Graphics are a bit dated, but still good considering the age of this game! Turn based combat (there is another way to resolve combat during set-up; however, I have never used it), which means the aggressor gets to shoot first while the attacked race waits their turn. A strong force attacking a weak force may never suffer losses. Summary - an older game but after 20+ years and literally months of playing time it never gets old. Highly recommended!!

Nice strategy games

I knew MoO only by name until I purchased it on Gog. It reminded me of civilization and Imperium Galactica : rich yet accessible gameplay, many parameters, and this wonderful megalomaniac feeling of conquering the universe. I put only 4 stars because these games have some little flaws : - MoO 1 is my favorite, great gameplay, but I waste too much time because of the old interface (e.g. you can't move the tiny map view by putting the mouse on the edges) - MoO 2 has a more detailed planet management, which is too heavy in my opinion.

Where is the little dialogue box...

... That says "Thank you for playing Master of Orion }{!" when you quit MoO2? Unplayable. No, it's actually all fantastic. MoO and MoO2 both work fantastically. MoO2 comes with patch 1.4 or something. I never knew of it, but it adds a few little options such as a "Cluster" galaxy size and a "Post-warp" starting civilization age. Honestly, this is worth it for the soundtrack it comes with alone.

Great and addicting space strategy game

So, I want to say beforehand that I never played these games when it first came out. I'm a pretty young gamer, so I never had a chance to play these older classics. My reveiw is from the perspective of a newcomer. I had never played a 4x game like this before, but I was willing to try it out after I saw it was on sale. It looked very interesting, and I'm a huge science fiction geek. I went in with expectations that it would be a dated but fun game. I have to say, my expectations were well met! Unfortunatelty, some people immediately think "boring, no action" when you talk about strategy games such as these. I have to say, that's not true. It may not involve running around or shooting, but I still had a fun and immersive experience. The strategy is so well thought out, I'm actually writing down notes and keeping logs of planets. It's definitely those games where you think "one more turn" and then it's two hours later, ha ha! There are so many components. You have to watch your planets, keep tabs on your fleet, go out and colonize new planets, stay wary of other races, it's incredible. It's so deep and there's so much to keep track of. It can get a bit overwhelming at some parts, but having to think of ways to prioritize makes it really enjoyable to try and figure out what you should do next. There is so much to do and consider! It's definitely a very rich experience with many layers to it. My only complaints: The UI is quite dated...it's an older game, after all. The font can sometimes be hard to read. You also have the same few screens; most of the time you'll be looking at the galaxy map and not much else. But, despite that, there's a lot of content here. This was my introduction to 4x games, and I have to say it was an excellent introduction. Don't let the release date scare you, this has definitely stood the test of time.

gog version has problems

Master of Orion 2 is a great game, but the gog.com version is bad. This version has mouse acceleration enabled with no way to turn it off. This makes it impossible for many people (such as myself) to enjoy the game. The frustration of being forced to use the mouse with this handicap is not worth any game, even a great one like MOO2. I am very disappointed with gog.com for selling an unplayable version of the game.
