Best game I ever played.

In this game, you play a wizard who is out to defeat 4 other powerful wizards either by building a bigger army or casting the spell of mastery before they do. The graphics are old 2d mostly with some 3d fighting, but this game has the greatest replay value of any game that I have played because it randomizes the map that is created EVERYTIME. You can customize your wizard as well giving life magic to a normally death magic wizard for example or pick from list of notations for 2 books of magic to let you start out with powerful spells, let you get more magic from nodes, or let your troops get to super elite status. If you like Warcraft II and Starcraft, this game is very similar. You have resources gold(from taxes), food (from the map), and Mana(from the node you meld to and temples you build) to collect and use to build an army to use to attack the other wizards. Each building that you build has a purpose for training special troops, giving you more food, or more gold. I have played this game thousands of times and it is fun each time. I purchase the game when it first came out and I re-purchase the update of the game with it when to CD when they added a hall of fame for the top 10 scores when the game ends. I love the game that much.

Still addictive

Civilization with magic instead of a technology tree. Still addictive 15 years after I last played it. Tons of replay value in the different mages you can choose, they make for a much different game than the different leaders in Civilization. And you can make your own custom mage if you want. There are two planes of existence to use, the regular plane and the magic plane. Most mages start on the regular plane, but if you are crafty you can colonize the other plane, build your armies and then conquer them all... There are so many different ways to play this game it's still great fun long after it was developed. No turn-based fantasy strategy game has come close to matching it since. It's easy to play, not too complicated and can be as deep or as simple as you like. If you hate the tactical battlefield, you can let the computer play it for you although if you take control you can sometimes pull off some amazing feats, beating the odds with great strategy. So much fun you'll wonder how "one more turn" turned into another hour!

One of the best strategy games ever.

This game, at the time of writing, is 18 years old. We had a few similar games, but none that surpassed this one in quality. Even the HOMM series, which IS excellent, does not live up to this, as it lacks the 4x elements. Not only is it well balanced, but it also offers many different possibilities of playing and hours upon hours of entertainment.

One of the better games out there!

I have purchased the game almost 20 years ago when it came out and was addicted to it until the CD stopped working. I couldn't be happier when I have just rediscovered it and I can tell you that they don't make that type of quality games today - true classic, awesome game play, great replay value, and tons of fun for everyone. Choose a unique race, two worlds to choose from, customize your spells, auto create unique world maps - yes this is a game from 1994 and it is that awesome!!! You will start talking like your wizard at some point. Let the Sky Drakes roam the havens and Spell of Reincarnation dominate the land because I am coming home baby!!! Bottom line - get it and you will see what I mean.

15 years and it's STILL the measure for fantasy 4X games!

Simtex did the impossible. They took the *entire* high fantasy genre and rolled it into one playable game. Literally good / evil magics and play styles, chaos magic that is both unreliable but nonetheless highly destructve on a global scale, possibly turning the whole world into an apocalyptic nightmare. Nature magic to heal the wounds of the earth - and the body - and strike down offenders with lightning... for looting and polluting is not the way! Breathtaking. The wizard creation tool provides near endless replay value because there is always one more combination of spell book picks and wizard traits you haven't tried yet. And races. Races that *matter*. That play differently. They have access to different buildings, different units, different tactics, different abilities. Then you have heroes to lead your armies, providing leadership or other benefits, or being spell casters themselves. And you can buy / conquer powerful magical items for their use or even cast massively powerful spells to *create* such artifacts. Again, this is heavily influenced by your wizard's magical orientation so a fire wizard won't create the red Cape of Flight. That the AI is weak should surprise noone. There is an impossible amount of options and tactics available. But what's wrong with winning a game as long as you can do so in new and interesting ways again and again...? If you can stand turn based strategy games at all, you will buy this game. You have no choice. TIP: The graphics are dated, no doubt, but can be massively improved by forcing DosBox to use a smaller area of the monitor. Provided your monitor still supports a resolution of 800x600 (or equivalent), the options fullscreen=true fullresolution=800x600 (in the DosBox *.conf file) force the game to use a smaller area in the center, reducing the pixelisation that you would normally get in true fullscreen mode. What looks so bad is not the game graphics - it's the huge pixels you get when "just" running it full screen.
