....on my C64, and just recently (few months ago) finally finished it! It simply is a great game, full of 80s atmosphere and pretty incredible for its time. Now going through Thimbleweed Park...do it!
Maniac Mansion is the first LucasArt game to use the famous SCUMM engine, and it shows. It's a bit clunky and of course, this is still back when you could fail in the game without knowing why. Eitherway, it's a nice little blast from the past and it was enjoyable.
Since there's a superior version included in the sequel Day of the Tentacle, I can only recommend this version if you're already a fan of the game.
Fantastic classic game, but uses SCUMMVM here to bypass the missing security door code in the enhanced version and also missing the DOS executable for the 1.0 version so you can't run it in a real DOS environment or DOSBox. The enhanced 2.0 version does include original executable though.
The game itself is obviously a classic. It's fine, as long as you don't expect it to be as polished as their later games. I don't have any nostalgia for it myself, but I can appreciate its significance.
But I also have to consider the "game experience", as the guidelines say.
The game ships with a six year old version of ScummVM, and it seems only one of the two versions include the original EXE file if you want to use a DOS emulator. The copy protection information is missing. ScummVM disables the copy protection by default (because of exactly this sort of things), but it means that if you enable the copy protection you're a bit stuck.
Worst of all, the "enhanced" version is cracked - and not even particularly well - in a way that nerfs several of the game's puzzles. You can still solve them the right way, but it's all on the honor system.
GOG claims they are unable to do anything about it, blaming the nebulous "developers".
So let's say 3 out of 5 for the game, but 2 out of 5 for the game experience.
