Love This Game More Than I Should

This is a game mostly about sitting in front of your computer screen wondering why your very expensive level ten warrior hero is fleeing in terror from a rat. Then you see that your tax collector decided it would be a good idea to try and collect taxes from the inn that is currently under attack from a troll. He dies in short order and takes his 3,000 pieces of gold with him. Then you notice a Minotaur making a bee line toward one of your outlying trading posts. You hurry and put all of your funds into a bounty, hoping to entice your strongest heroes. They all decide they would rather visit a gambling den. Instead, your level one wizard thinks that this is his moment to shine and goes beserk. He dies in one hit. Next thing you know its 4 hours later, you've overcome dated graphics, rage-inducing AI stupidity and a very overactive sewer system (seriously, what are the peasants in this game eating that all these rat people are leaving their sewars?) to be told by a knock off Sean Connery that you have beaten the demon Furbleflurb and saved the kingdom. Like I said in the title. I love this game way more than logic dictates I should.

How did I miss this jewel?

Great game. I played the Majesty 2 demo a number of years ago and did not like it. I had not played the first game and just assumed that it was as weak as Majesty 2. Recently, I picked up Majesty Gold HD here at GOG during a sale after playing its demo. This game has seized my attention for the past several days, and I'm going to play some random maps as soon as I finish this review! The game is a refreshingly deep, but light-hearted fantasy adventure/city-building simulator. Your role is "the sovereign" who puts together towns that produce heroes, goods, and services to conquer the evil world around you. There is a broad array of classes that you can recruit, along with a good number of spells and abilities that they can learn. You cannot outright control your units, but you can "motivate" their behavior and routines though monetary rewards. There are about 30 scenarios, ranging from "kill the evil lich queen" to "beat back the waves of monstrous invaders." Except for 4-5 ridiculously hard maps, most of the scenarios are fun and challenging. The game has a good sense of humor and doesn't take itself too seriously. The HD graphics update makes it tolerable to look at, though the buildings look better than the units or the terrain. The audio largely consist of a hilarious narrator, unit soundbites, and a decent set of orchestral tracks. It all comes together as a solid, entertaining package. Shortcomings are few. Although there is a good random map generator that comes with the game, this is a game that really should have come with a scenario editor and other modding tools. It seems that the developer purposefully made the game difficult or impossible to mod. Also, guard towers come down a little too easily given their cost, and the game suffers from the base sprawl that plagued the last generation of RTS games. Anyhow, this is a fantastic game for anyone interested in a casual, but often challenging fantasy world simulator. (8.5/10)

Not nostalgia

I'd never even heard of Majesty until a couple of years ago, probably because like Darklands and a few other neglected classics its, frankly rubbish, name doesn't make it stand out. A shame, because this is a highly enjoyable mixture of RTS and "kingdom sim" with the unusual twist that you create a whole lot of characters, from heroes to peasants to the (very) humble gnomes who then go around living their own lives with the player's management largely restricted to buildings. Yes, your heroes will fight the monsters menacing your borders, but they might also want to take time out at an inn or even run away like Brave Sir Robin. It's up to the player to put cash incentives in place to encourage these independent characters to focus on the things that matter to you and, for this reason, it feels completely different to the micro-managing RTS titles it might resemble from screenshots. It's an unusual take on this type of game but it works and is enormous fun. My only real reservation is that the learning curve from the (rather too numerous) "Beginner" to "Advanced" missions is a bit too steep.

Labor of love

This game feels like the developers really put their hearts into it. Everything from the sound to the graphic to the gameplay is expertly done. One of my all time favourites that I still play from time to time.

My favourite RTS ever

You will be surprised how much depth can have RTS game where you can't control units directly. It is calm and meditative experience on low difficulty where you can just watch characters roam around and interact with environment and each other. And absolute chaos on high where your kingdom will be constantly ambushed by dragons, vampires and ogres. Main campaign is great enough by itself and than there is Random Map Generator providing countless hours of gameplay.
