Definitely a worthy successor to the original and the additions of expansion packs with campaigns is welcome. I would say the difficulty ramp-up compared to the original is significant with many levels at high risk from rushes and flooding by enemies, but as per usual if you persevere and switch setups you can (usually) prevail.
The hands-off management style is a change and doesn't suit everyone, but allows a more casual (although challenging) experience.
You have to run the game at a capped 20 FPS or it does not work properly -> enemy spawns, build times and maybe other things are tied to FPS in such a way that every FPS above 20 makes the game more difficult, and this is an exponential problem. A test showed that building time from 20 FPS to 60 FPS increases by 2.5x and at 120 FPS by 4.0x.
The game is essentially unplayable normally, it has an absolutely atrocious balance because of this bug. Fixing the bug requires playing at an absolutely horrid FPS which makes even scrolling around feel horrible.
This game should not be sold in this state.
This game was rebalanced, but original campaign wasn't taken into consideration. Now you basically can't finish a mission where you have to slay a Rafnir dragon. Dragon destroys your buildings north of the castle while dragonlings are zerging you to the ground killing all your lvl1 heroes.
Crap AI, level design on the level of 10 year old, no creativity, not even comperable to what I remembered back in the days of Majesty, Not much new as well.
