Wielding both blade and magic, it is your duty to protect the floating Celestial Islands from powerful opponents who seek to corrupt them. Challenge your fate and build your card deck to defeat foes and complete missions. Evolve your character with every playthrough, and become the Mahokenshi the world needs.

Where will you start your journey? Will you hail from the sturdy House of Sapphire? The cunning House of Topaz? The fierce House of Ruby? Or the secretive House of Jade? Each house draws its strength from a different elemental spirit and allows you to create different playstyles.

There are more than 200 lovingly illustrated cards to discover. Begin with a basic set of cards and choose how to build your deck as you defeat formidable foes, uncover treasures, and find remote locations. Be careful, as each terrain offers different advantages, so plan your actions with the surroundings in mind. Evolve your playstyle and strategy in every mission and leverage the strengths of your samurai house to create powerful combos.

Travel a vast array of vibrant and beautifully designed 3D maps. Meet the different people of the Celestial Islands, save villages, discover shrines and defeat deadly demons. See your battles brought to life with fully animated characters. Perform magical maneuvers, fiery attacks, strong defensive moves, and swift counterattacks on your way to restoring peace to the world.

A Solid Card-Strategy Turn-Based Game

POSITIVES: - It is a card-battle game, and a turn-based strategy, set in Japanese mythology. The game is immersing and it is fun to play. - The level of difficulty is well-balanced. The mission tasks are interesting as well and force you to think outside the box. - You can select one of four characters at any time during the game, and they all have very unique characteristics. - Missions can be replayed as often as you want, and with different characters. - The battle system is very interesting. The game requires you to apply some strategy, and study the map, the terrain, type of enemies etc. before you engage. - The control is easy and intuitive. WHAT COULD BE BETTER: - There are no achievements/trophies with the version of the game on GOG. It appears this is only available on Steam but, even there, they only relate to completion of the chapters, not achieving anything in combat and/or the playthrough. - Your characters get experience points for completing tasks and winning battles but you cannot go beyond level 10. - Most cards, gold and other things you collect have to be found during the missions and are lost when the mission ends. Essentially, you need to re-build your deck in every mission. Moreover, Luck plays a significant role in the playthrough. - The skills progression system (called the ‘Ways of the Mahoken’ divided into ‘sword’, ‘humility’, and ‘valor’) is okay but does not offer much, and it is nothing innovative. Moreover, it applies to all your characters at the same time – there is no individual skills progression for each character. - The story offers nothing new and it is forgettable. - The music is atmospheric but forgettable. CONCLUSION: It is definitely a recommended title. It is a very solid ‘card-strategy turn-based’ game that is fun to play for some time. It is immersive but, ultimately, forgettable.

L5R made boring

Uneasy 3D camera, uninteresting merchant skills for those maho-samurais, timed missions with secondary goals but ending immediatly at primary success, heroes without charism (even in gameplay),... At first the world was interesting with its clans, but the gameplay didn't follow. You may like the game, however, but don't count on a PC L5R game, that's far from it, despite setting and art.

Interesting but no deckbuilding

I'm only three hours in the game but it's still clear which are its strengths and its weakness. It has an interesting worldbuild, a good replayability and and interesting way of using cards for moving on the map, even to escape from enemies. The concept is very good, and enjoyable. BUT But the con is nearly deadly: There is no deckbuilding. You find cards in each missions but they're discarded at the end. With level ups you only unlock some cards that you will potentially find in the next missions. So, you cannot develop a strategy based on the cards: you only have to hope to find cards that have effects chained to each other when you find them on the maps. This doesn't help to think a complex strategy but rather to get the cards with the simpliest and most immediate effects. So: no deckbuilding, and hope in luck. For a card game is not a tiny problem... Nevertheless, I will not give one star because the rest is very well made (not unforgettable, but well made)

Pleasant surprise, competent execution

I wasn't expecting too much out of this game due to other reviews. The game is definitely competent at what it's trying to do. The campaign is roughly 20 missions, and the missions often have some little aspect that makes them unique in their own way. Each playable character has their own strengths and weaknesses, and whenever you unlock a new one there's typically a sidemission that plays to that character's strengths. Good design. I've seen people get annoyed that some mission objectives aren't intuitively completable while you're aiming for the main objective, but I don't feel like that was a problem. Some are intended to be challenging, or replayed, not something to complete without thought. The game really shines when a build comes together and you realize how the cards are meant to be combo'ed together. Most spells have unique animations, so different characters and builds are distinctive visually and gameplay-wise. The art and narration are a cut above most games imo. The music is generally thematic, and unintrusive. There are two minor nitpicks I had: 1. When you charge an opponent with Kaito (Sapphire Tank) it seems to select the most direct path. I'd have preferred if you could choose between valid destinations to maximize AoE. 2. There are certain opponents who clog up your hand with negative cards. Some of them can add about 3 per turn, and it's a bit annoying to spend energy to get rid of them. I'd have preferred if they get destroyed through dedicated discard effects instead of getting re-shuffled. The game is still easy enough to complete, but it can catch you off guard when you get surrounded and only draw useless cards. Overall it's probably worth full price if it's your kind of game, and if you're on the fence it's definitely worth it when discounted.
