Build turrets that fire waves of miniature suns? Or summon hordes of adorable jelly minions? How about firing lasers that shoot exploding black holes that suck out your enemies' life force? You can totally do that in Magicmaker.

What kind of wizard will you be? Probably a really cool one, I bet.

Power Overwhelming

I played MagicMaker back in it's alpha and it was great then. Very happy to see that it made it to GOG, you can tell the developer loves this game a lot. This game focuses on spellbuilding, that's what makes the game cool and very buyable. While this is concept is not new in games today or even in the past, the execution and the levels this game takes spells to is what should make you buy the game. Spell creation is spectacular and you don't feel limited. For example, in skyrim or even oblivion/morrowind, a ranged fireball is a ranged fireball. But in this game, you can make your fireballs bounce, split into more fireballs, and then seek out enemies. So why care about making spells? Because this game is a tactical platformer. You need spells to solve problems like enemies who can quickly hurt you in melee but who are around a corner. Or massive hordes of enemies that avoid single shot spells that are good against high health bosses. Or just simple navigation of teleporting/flying around an environment that will kill you if you stand on it. The game is short and sweet, the story is very humorous and lighthearted. Expect harry potter type humor for sure. I had fun just building spells and testing them out on enemies for hours, trying to build solutions to the problems the game's enemies/environment threw at me. Enjoy and build a nuke for me!

Fun game but...

The two billion spells thing is true, but its almost a lie. I know that sounds weird but this is how it is: Each component has 5 ranks, A, B, C, D, F You can slot up to 5 components into your wand, at least at the point I'm at, there might be more later There are around 100 components I have found so far (only 5 hours in) Since this is a combination, not a permutation, the same component can be slotted multiple times So far with just these numbers I can make nearly 1.5 million combinations, this increasing exponentially with each new base component. Now onto the game: It reminds me a lot of A Valley Without Wind, it's a 2D platformer at heart with a twin stick shooting mechanic that is made unique by the staggering amount of spell effects. You can summon a turret that shoots flaming lightning or fire a ball of fire that turns into suns that freeze everything, it is truly amazing how much destruction you can make with one spell! (my personal favorite being a beam of energy that can charm enemies that then run into other enemies and explode.) Overall I would recommend the game solely on its gameplay, however almost every mission is a fetch quest plus an arbitrary addition like "Don't step on the carpet.". I'm a bit shocked the developer used the 2 billion spells thing as a tagline as it overhypes the crafting system, which is quite simple, you have a wand with slots and you put components that dictate your damage, abilities, special effects, and status aliments into the slots, you can do the same with scrolls you find which make more powerful spells and your robe, however the components slotted into your robe have different effects from your wand. TL;DR: Fun gameplay blemished by repetitive quests and an overhyped crafting system

Neat concept, but very shallow otherwise

Great concept, but terribly limited game play. Though there are certainly many spell combos that are fun to play around with, you eventually find out the best set up for each level, then use that to grind out the highest level spell drops. So, in all, you'll only ever use twelve or so spell set ups to maintain maximum efficiency for the six different levels. Or however many there are. It's a very simplistic game.

Bad UI hinders the making of spells.

First off, the game may look like shit in a youtube video but its surprisingly beautiful once you see it on your own screen, everything has a nice charm to it. Don't be fooled, its a good looking game. But for all the praise people seem to heap on this fun little game and its supposedly vast options for different spell creations, they seem to miss mentioning the fact that actually creating, testing, saving and use of these spells is kind of a pain in the ass due to a hopelessly inadequate UI design. A design that cuts the UI in half and places it on opposite ends of the screen while expecting you to use both ends at the same time. A design that lets you name your spells but actually saving and loading your spells is done purely with a single small indistinguishable icon for every spell, so good luck remembering all the hundreds of little icons, some of which are only different in color, some only different by a slightly different shade of the same color. There's more problems like this and the game is hopelessly inadequate in this respect. There are far too few slots for spells/wands. The controls could also have been done better as some buttons are redundant but you are forced to use them anyway due to the inclusion of a wall walking spell, a spell that isn't even implemented well enough. The supposed vast number of custom spells only come from the fact that every spell effect is implemented 5 times (5 different strength levels, like add an explosion effect to your spell of a width of x and you'll have 5 different numbers), if this was not the case you would only end up with a few hundred different spells. Most of which look and feel a lot alike no mater what you do with them. The game is also very short, you'll finish it in a day or two. None of that makes it a bad game mind you, the grinding for spell components makes sure to put a damper on your enjoyment though, good luck with that bullshit. This game has far too much room for improvement, but it is fun.

Delightful Little Time Waster

Particles, customization, and satire, all this and more; Real fun... Oh you wanted a full review? Okay then: The game starts you off unemployed, in order to make money to pay the rent you get hired by wizards to be a 'guard'. You can choose any mission type you want, although the harder difficulties are labeled by a Piece of cake, to a RIP tombstone as the difficulty. Missions range from investigating an area, to collecting sand. Every area you have to beat the boss of the level in order to escape. Once you unlock an area, you can replay it multiple times. Magic and item customization is rather simple, you have materials you can insert into your robes, wand, 2 spells, and an artifact you can carry around that gives you a boost. Materials are Labeled from A-F. Each material has a spell/wand effect, and a robes effect. You can also choose your spell/wand to be an enchantment which gives certain passives a larger boost, but a number of the materials seem less useful as they don't do damage. Materials you un-attach go back in your inventory, so feel free to experiment. Often if you get a newer version of a material, you can click 'upgrade' and the highest version will replace the current one. Quite Convenient! You can even name your own equipment, or just use the random button a few times and a decent name will populate. The art style is simplistic, seemingly circles and triangles at locations to give the characters shape. Okay it's a little more than that, although seemingly a little paper-like, it's definitely no south park. In many ways it's better, although simpler. There is no economy system (although you can create materials at one stand); As such you can customize the looks of your character almost right away with a large variety of fun clothes, styles and colors. There's several references to Hogwarts and the Harry Potter books, general satire, and is very light hearted. Expect it to be a decent time waster, but you may get bored after 6 hours.
