Mafia III misfire

Mafia 1 and 2 are two of my favorite story-driven "open world" games of all time. Mafia III is not. A new protagonist, Lincoln Clay, freshly back from Vietnam pushes a Louisiana revenge story. Revenge isn't usually the sole anchor of a mafia narrative, and Mafia III doesn't feel like a mafia story as much as a 60's/70's blaxploitation revenge tale. In the telling of the tale, Mafia III stumbles again; it uses completely unengaging Congressional testimony footage too often (isn't Congressional testimony footage emotional and engaging?) as a narrative device and follows that up with flashbacks that hold absolutely no emotional no weight. It's clear that there was the ambition to tell a sprawling story of race, revenge, and chaos in the 60's deep South, but there wasn't a concerted effort to effectively tell a mafia story with a strong, emotional story. The only aspect of storytelling that works at all in the game are the characters. Clay is almost painfully boring and one-note, but many of the new characters inhabiting New Bordeaux are quite interesting. It's too bad they weren't part of an engaging story. Gameplay in Mafia III is a mess. From broken mechanics to terrible AI and repetitive tasks, gameplay quickly becomes a chore. At one point I whistled 20 times, lured 20 enemies out a single door and strangled all 20, one-at-a-time. Mixed with a lack of weapon balancing, terrible driving mechanics, and a generally non-reactive world, there's little to enjoy from gameplay. In fact, Godfather II, a game from 2009, uses many of the same systems more successfully and is overall a much better game. In the end, Hangar 13 tried to make a revenge game about race and the 60's, but they forgot they were making a mafia game. I firmly believe 2KCZECH could have made a mafia game that encapsulated all of those same ideas and themes but was a fun and engaging mafia game. Other than an absolutely amazing soundtrack, Mafia III is a severe misfire.

Bugs that ruin your savegane

They just launched a unfinished game without all the necessary testing. Several bugs that will hinder your progress, missions that dont load, enemies that dont spawn. I got a bug that prevent enemies to spawn in a mandatory mission and it dosent matter how I reboot the game they will never show up. Now I cant kill them and I am forever stuck. More than 10 hours of gameplay for nothing. A shame, this could be a great game with a amazing story but the horrible pacing and the bugs just ruin everything. Dont buy, it will only give you headaches.

Such a shame

I loved Mafia 1 and 2 on release, and this game looked like it had everything going for it. Great new setting (who doesn't love New Orleans?), intense story, interesting characters, and (one would assume) great modern gameplay developments in the 6 years since the release of Mafia 2. Oh boy did they get most of it wrong. The story and cinematics are pretty much the only saving grace of this game, and it feels like a great disservice to the cast and crew behind the story that the rest of the game is so bland and monotonous. New Orleans (or whatever they call it here), is flat and boring with zero interactivity. I know that's been a staple of the Mafia series that 'it's linear and not like GTA', however, even Mafia 2 which was criticised for being uninteractive is WAY more interactive than this. Here you can basically rob stores and that's about it. It's not helped that the map and mission layout feels more designed for free roam than the previous Mafia games. After a solid opening hour or so that might trick you into thinking it seems fun, the real game begins and undoes all the cinematic legwork that came before. The general mission structure and variety is the real meat of the issue as to why this game doesn't work. It's astoundingly repetitive, with mission after mission copy-pasted from each other, and usually just 'go here, destroy this, kill guys' etc. And there are so many of them. Every so often you get given a more original side-quest, but they're a small percentage of the overall grind. Also, if you want to be immersed, this game will challenge your patience with its constant bugs, ugly graphics issues and dodgy pedestrian AI. Colours are all washed out and there are graphical anomalies in the weather and light that seemingly never got fixed, and it's a blurry mess unless you run it at extra-high settings and then it becomes very performance heavy. Some solid gunplay, music and cinematics and that's it unfortunately.

good game; could have been great.

This is a good game. Good driving and shooting mechanics. Good atmospheres. It could have been great but there are a lot of repetitive actions. It's also very important to distinguish between a product of fiction and the false claims made by some saying that it's "racist towards white people". I think some people don't like the game because it's inspired by a dark period of America's history that is usually depicted only from the white, prosperous family perspective while ignoring everything else. The game ruins the bliss of living in ignorance. It's not "racist towards white people" to tell someone that a lot of people were racist in 1960s America. It's history.

ridiculous storytelling

I buy most of my games for their story. I was severely disappointed with this one. Totally unbelievable. Completely devoid of likeable characters. Radical racism engulfs every character and lacks empathy of any kind. If you're looking for a game with a gripping, thought-provoking story like the Witcher series, Kingdom Come Deliverance, or similar titles, this is not the one. 2 stars for driving around in old cars while listening to great oldies visiting well-done environments. Would get eaten by crocs again.
