This Mafia lost its Charme
For context, I am a huge Gangster Movie fan, and have goodfellas as my all time favorite movie. I played the original when it came out and completed it more times than i can count. Played the second one a lot as well and just finished it again a few months ago. A month ago I got the definitiy edition of Mafia 1 on steam and for the first time started and finished it within a week. First things first, the graphics look beautiful, the story changes are perhaps not necessary, but not negative nor positive in general. Gameplay feels a bit stiff and old, but honestly nothing too grave to say its a negative the real reason i will most likely never play this again, and feel indifferent about it right after finishing it, is the lost charme. The voice acting is changed 100% and now the characters sound like caricatures of italian americans. Completely distracting how over the top it is (imo) and not likeable or believable at all. Tommy in the OG Mafia I understood why and how he fell deeper and deeper into the mob circle, how he fell in love with sarah etc. (things i dont want to spoil), but here, all of them including tommy, just come off as assholes. Secondly, and this might be an even larger issue, mafia OG lived from its atmosphere, and a large part of that was the music from the 30s, 40s, 50s etc. Beautiful songs of that era that made a drive a joy and made the city and graphics feel good and feel real in your mind. In Mafia Def edition, there is almost no music. mostly instrumental songs that are completely forgettable. a real and important letdown. So all in all, its a good remaster, a grapical update on top of an older skelleton, with diminished voice acting and music. I recommend it still, because the original doesnt look appealing at all anymore and i understand that. so get this, play it, and enjoy. i think its best not to compare it to the original and just take this for what it is.
