medium-sized dish of good pasta

This game is a true classic, in every meaning of the word. That means you get good graphics, an engaging story, great voice acting, music I still remember 15 years later and atmosphere you could almost touch. On the downside, it also means game-play can be a bit clunky, the vast city has very little to do in it and, once you get done with the main plot -- that's pretty much it. Aside from some goofy, GTA-style missions collecting cars, the replay value is zero. If you've never played it and you enjoy the genre, go ahead and grab it (well, maybe when it's on sale). If you prefer fluid, fast paced action to storytelling and atmosphere, maybe this is not for you.

A classic

I never got into Mafia, but I recall my younger brother playing it to death. What follows is his unprompted review of the game when I mentioned it to him on Facebook: "This game was the GTA of mafia games back then, it is STILL one of my favorites, they just don't do stories like these anymore, Long stories with multiple chapters, and the game had no difficulty setting, it was just, hard in some parts. and even after you completed the game they had a free play mode you unlocked that gave you, even more, missions with sweet "new age" vehicles, muscle cars, hot rods, even unique cars like this electric alien car that had this electric bar across the hood. Even the new mafia 2 and 3 dont live up to the epic gameplay of the original. Nope, they dont make games like this anymore."

Still a masterpiece

Got the game when it came out 18 years ago and played it to death in the years between. Finally got it on GoG and not only runs it great (besides some graphical glitches, but nothing serious) but it instantly throws me back to when it came out. It still plays great and the story is still amazing. As a german, it's really nice to see it uncut and with a simple modification, you still get to experience the original music, that made the game even more special back in the day. Absolute must play!

Most cinematic game ever made?

Ah yes The City of Lost Heaven. How hooked I was to this game, nothing would ever compare to it, it was like playing in a Scorcese movie, playing as a naive taxi driver who's life has changed overnight and now working his way up as a mobster, he's not very ambitious and has a soft spot for women, sorry I meant dames... but I said too much already! You will love Tommy. This was the times of GTA3 and Max Payne but Mafia took the best from both, here you have the tight cinematic writing from Max Payne and the immersive city hustle and bustle of GTA3 which was heralded as something special until Mafia came out and made it look like an arcade game. Every mission is memorable and will stay with you for a long time. Two decades have passed since I played it first time and it feels like yesterday. Cruisng on a beautiful car through the Hoboken on a chilly morning in Autumn, listening to some fine jazz on the radio, the stool pigeon has to die.
