Description
M1 Tank platoon II gives you command of a platoon of four M1A2 Abrams tanks and their crew. You make all the important decisions; including firing your tank's vast arsenal of weapons and using the state-of-the-art thermal view to seek out and destroy enemy forces. Switch between fully-functioning internal cockpits or, observe the conflict at first hand with the external 3-D view. It's all there for you: from commanding an individual tank to calling in support from aircraft, helicopters, ground vehicles and infantry!
Jump into Instant Action with a random single battle scenario that pits you against front-line Russian troops and equipment
Complete your training at 'actual' U.S. Army facilities at the Armor School, Fort Knox and the National Training Center, Fort Irwin
Take part in a variety of pre-configured single battles and replay great historical and hypothetical conflicts: including the Gulf War and Cold War scenarios
Choose a Campaign theatre of war from Gulf War II, North Africa, Russian Far East, Balkans or Central Europe and fight a string of battles with every mission dictated by your strategic performance in previous missions
Experience a dynamic reality; some 'targets' will be rebuilt as the campaign evolves, while others might be destroyed by 'friendly' units

Perhaps the most played game for me in the late 90s and early 2000s. Running it in software mode, it seems to be working perfectly in win10.
This is the patched version 1.2 of the game.
if you can get the old program M1EDIT you can run that in dosbox and with it, make custom scenarios and even edit the terrain too
the game itself is not perfect, -the AI tanks in version 1.2 will pummel you with their tube launched atgms - the tanks that had that feature, but will only ever use their barrels it seems once they are within 1000 metres.
the enemy air support also seems feebler in 1.2 than in 1.1
On Win10 compatibility: it works well and is stable if you stick to software renderer.
Glide/DX wrappers work up til mission end. Keeping desktop at 800x600 and 16bit color in the wrappers, I sometimes finish missions with no crash, but still crashes too often. You'll have to do the mission all over. DxWnd might help, but I'm done.
IS IT FUN?
Haven't seen much said about the negatives, so I'll focus on that.
M1TP2 attempts to carry on with what made the original great, but I'm afraid the missions develop too fast tactically, and it robs you of enjoying the first-person tank crew game. The tank simulation is cool for the most part (there's a bug with the gunner ignoring TC's target designations I hear), but the missions can be a handful if you try to play methodically.
What ruins the game for me is the combination of enemy artillery and the command interface. The enemy, if they have arty for that mission and line of sight on your unit, will often call it in as an opening move from the very instant you click start. So your first move before clicking start should be to order your units away from their spawn positions, so that they're not immobilized or killed.
The rest of the game you have to be conscious of this threat, so you'll want to keep your platoons either separated or mobile while they're at risk of being targeted. The interface isn't good for this. You'll have a difficult time keeping tabs on who's in danger, and you'll struggle with the individual unit orders. The mouse interface is there but it's very archaic in how it wants you to select and issue orders.
More can be said, but GOG reviews have a 2k character limit. The above I found most detrimental. And there are many things to praise the game for, with its trademark Microprose inclusion of a dynamic campaign for one, and fundamentally the game is a cool tank sim. But you can read about the good bits anywhere else.
There's still fun to be had, but ultimately I think it'll be an acquired taste.
If you are using Lutris, make sure you enable 3dfx Voodoo support and have that option on in the runner config section.
Note works great on Linux. Back blowing up enemy tanks, but you are going to get pummeled by missiles!
This old game, I have played for many hours, but it did not work on work on Win 7 and higher. So, I was happy when it became available in GOG and made compatible with Win7 & 10. Unfortunately, I now have upgraded to Win 11 and again, it does not work (this is clearly stated on the GOG website). I do hope, that GOG will find a way to make this game working on Win 11 too.
