Description
Lovecraft’s Untold Stories is an action roguelite with RPG elements. You explore randomly generated levels based in H.P. Lovecraft stories, fighting cultists and all kinds of monsters from the Mythos, improving your weapons and gear, solving puzzles and challenges, and looking for clues and knowledge to defeat the Great Old Ones and the Outer Gods.

LIVE H.P. LOVECRAFT’S STORIES

Lovecraft’s Untold Stories is based on H.P. Lovecraft’s stories. You will experience first-hand the cosmic horror created by the genius of Providence. Every character will go through an investigation that will take them through different locations, from the creepy old Victorian mansion to the abandoned hospital where forbidden experiments take place or the jungle where lost tribes celebrate forgotten rituals, just to name a few. Levels are randomly generated: it will be a different experience every time you play. Also, they vary depending on the character you’re playing with. Look for items and clues to unlock secrets and new stories!

5 CHARACTERS, 5 WAYS OF FIGHTING THE MYTHOS

You can play as 5 different characters, each with a different playstyle and storyline. A private detective, a witch, a thief, a professor, and even a ghoul—each with different stats, weapons, and combat moves, creating five entirely different gameplay experiences. The Detective offers a balanced playstyle, with average Health and Stamina. The Professor is a specialist in ranged combat, with less Health and a special shield granted by his weapon, the Tillinghast. The Witch does a lot of damage, has teleport abilities and elemental shields of fire and ice, but also a very low Health. The Thief is a specialist in melée combat that takes advantage of its stealth to maximize her damage. The ghoul does a lot of melée damage, has a high Health and regenerates itself, but can’t use medkits at all.

DISCOVER THE SECRETS OF THE GREAT OLD ONES

The truth of the dark horrors that inhabit the universe is unbearable for any human mind. In the end, you can’t win against the Old Ones. Madness or death await you. But maybe you can delay the inevitable… If you face the Great Old Ones without any knowledge about them, you will go mad just by looking at their hideous features. But spread across every level you will find special items with information about the Great Old Ones. The more you know about them, the stronger your mind shall become – but knowledge is not easy to find, and if you are not thorough in your investigation you might get to the end of a storyline without finding everything that is to know. You will have to play with all the characters if you want to find all the information about every Great Old One!

MADNESS AWAITS

Insanity crawls behind every corner for those who face the Mythos. In your investigations, you will face different situations where you have to choose what to do – make the wrong decision and you will start losing your mind. In order to face the Great Old Ones, you need knowledge, and to find it you have to explore – but the more you explore the more events that shake your sanity you will find… Those who go mad under the influence of the Mythos take their own life to escape the eternal terror they are now looking at. Not all hope is lost, though – there are some ways to recover your sanity…

Does Not Respect Your Time

I hate rating this so low, the game has so much potential that is utterly wasted due to a single bad design decision. There is no mid-level save feature. The devs try to justify this by endlessly repeating "This is a roguelite". The problem with this is, and something the devs continually ignore or don't understand, is that roguelitess typically make levels relatievly short, so that lost progress is reasonable, or even offer suspend saves in you need to step away from the computer. This game's levels can take upwards of 3 HOURS to complete in the latter half of a character's campaign. 3 hours for a top down action game where a single mistake can kill you in seconds. This game is balanced as if its actually Rogue, but has punishing reflex based combat that it expects you to keep up for hours at a time with no break. The moment to moment gameplay is fun, the gaphics are charming, but this one bad decision completely sinks the game and makes it unplayable. Unless you literally have no real life obligtions, or are like, a kid on summer break, avoid this game. Its not worth you're time, and neither does it value it anyway.

Neat concept, sloppy gameplay

I initially was quite intrigued by this game as it reminded me of an old pixelated action horror game where you needed to navigate a haunted mansion full of spooks. It turns out it is a kind of rouge-like with a lovecraftian theme. I was intrigued at first, but eventually I realised it is not good enough to warrant the investment. While the pixel graphics are well made, you will get tired of seeing them. Im not a fan of pixels, so it may be just me. The story aspect of the game isnt that interesting. There are interesting pieces to explore, but overall ... Maybe I didnt get far enough into the game to see the cool stuff, but the beginning wasnt enough to keep me going. The gameplay isnt that fun or well thought out. In the game you move from room to room and each room is randomlly generated. Some rooms are bigger than others. And some rooms are more cluttered than others. Meaning you may not have proper space to maneuver against enemies and bosses. Another thing is the poorly balanced sanity system. Almost everything you explore will give a sanity hit, while there are few ways to avoid it and treating it isnt easy. The rewards you get from exploring the stuff usually arent that great either. In this game you have a lot of debuffs, almost each requiring their own healing method. But you have limited inventory space to collect the stuff. You also have no indicator of what to expect in a new zone when you leave stuff behind. You also have a lot of different stuff, but a lot of it is useless. The old "Why use a plus +50 ice resistance ring when I can use a +20 health ring, since I dont know whats coming" problem. So gathering loot and planning is a pain. Projectiles and firing work by navigating the mouse where you want them to go. Thing is, the enemies are quite quick, so using stuff like grenades, dynamite, etc. isnt efficient. All of the above isnt a good recipe for a roguelike game. Its not a bad game, but it isnt ironed out to the point of being fun.

Great pixel art, mediocre gameplay

Not much else to say about this game, it looks great and offers a good first impression but the gameplay doesn't hold up. You just run through rooms, kill everything and loot everything. The game dumps loads of loot on you that you don't even bother inspecting because it feels like trash loot. Combat isn't very interesting and doesnt compare to games like Enter the Gungeon. Also comparing this to Clive Barker's Undying is blasphemy since that game was actually great.

Lovecraft fans who want some action

First off, I am a lovecraft fan. But I want to make the tone and style of this game clear... If you're looking for mystery suspense, slow pace gameplay. this ain't it chief. If you're looking for action on par with Doom and Quake, but from an isometric view, then welcome home. This game is tough as nails, very violent, and just plain cool. Basically you run around with a shotgun blasting every cosmic horror with your shotgun. If this sounds good to you (like it did to me), then buy this game. Perfect for the gamer who wants to blast their way through the Lovecraft universe rather than slowly unravel it.

Could have been a descent game

This game could have been a good surprise but the gameplay as well as the random difficulty completely ruin it. The little fun of the first level disappears very quickly and we spend our time treating ourselves (when we have a cure) of too many state alterations. The traps are indistinguishable in the porridge of pixels. After the detective, the professor I unlocked offers an equally moldy gameplay. What a pity, the Lovecraft world deserved better than this ersatz where cultists face us with flamethrower
