zilla & bingo are your best friends.

This game has consumed as much of my childhood as any other game gog is likely to acquire. For good reasons too. The game is compelling and well put together and though it did have it's share of glitches and crashes it was worth putting up with. In the original game (not legends of urak) you play as one of the champions of urak: a Thief, Mage, or Warrior for the parties of either life, order, chaos, water, fire, earth, or air. After beating the game you also unlock the death party as a playable faction. the game is turn based and that can get tiring, but given a chance this game will surprise you. The expansion Legends of urak is equally fun and included in this package. You take on the mantle of some of urak's legendary figures. The only one I can recall is that of prince Arthur and Merlin's quest through Camelot. Here's some of the most helpful info I can give you as an aspiring adventurer: Ctrl+c: opens cheat menu ALL SPELLS: gives your party all the spells in the game. BINGO: Gives you 200 of every resource. ZILLA: Gives you a Level 10 Dragon GO FAR: gives you an extra 1000 steps for your turn. Good luck!

LAN and Artifact Problems

Ok so I saw someone talking about Artifacts not sticking to their Lords and Champions. When you have problems moving items. Save your game and restart the game loading your save will fix this. Also when using LAN. You need an IPX wrapper. I used an ipx wrapper and moved 4 dll files and now I can make a LAN game and join it with multiple computers. My problem is, by round 2 the game freezes on the other computers except for the computer I host the game on. Anyone got suggestions to fixing this? TY

Leaves a lasting Impression.

See what I did with the title? Good pun, eh? I first played the demo when I was a kid and wasn’t until a few years ago, nearly a couple of decades since I first played the demo that I finally picked up the GOG release. I didn’t complete it until I tried again recently and suprisingly I did after playing Air in a few days. SsethTzeentach’s review on YouTube is a perfectly memetastic way of explaining this game, but I’ll also throw in my hopefully unbiased views on it. Its an imbalanced game for sure. Chaos is weak starting out and there is a bug in their nation that makes one of the weaker creatures in the dungeons a high level creature impossible to beat without a developed army. This was fixed by fans. You’ll get graphical glitches here and there resolved by restarting the game and the occasional crash. However you’ll never lose progress as it autosaves at the start of every turn. Its achieved an amazing atmosphere filled with weird and wonderous creatures and a varying landscape filled with danger and mystery. Its true the animations, especially in combat could stand to be more developed, however if you’re focusing on those small details, you’re missing what’s happening with your other units and you could get them killed. The UI is beautifully crafted to be both immersive and easily read, even my two year old self (whom mostly played Doom and Sacrifice) easily understood what everything did. The music is wonderful and carefully crafted to each nation, however having certain songs play in certain nation terrain types, or just variation other than your nation’s song would have been great. Overall, its a smaller game than many of Impressions Games’. It focuses on exploration, diplomacy and combat rather than city building and although you can have good relations with other nations, its ultimately a conquest game. If you want to fully explore the map, be sure to leave one opposing nation’s Lord alive to do so, or it will end the game with your full conquest.

mediocre strategy game

Not totally terrible. I played this when I was young, so I have a warm place in my heart for it, but overall it's not nearly as good as the other "lords of the realm" games, including, IMHO, the somewhat maligned LOTR3. The AI is *super* wonky, and there are a great abundance of strategic "hacks" to beat the game without really trying. Like, more than almost any other strategy game I've ever played. Makes the game feel incredibly unbalanced, and I never feel like it's a genuine competition between 8 different races for control of Urak. It's all the other races acting in some bizarre random fashion, and me either pwning them with 0 effort, or randomly having an OP bandit gang pwn me. OTOH, the artifact-accumulation process is pretty satisfying, so if you're into just getting loot and leveling up, you'll enjoy this game.

Outstanding memories

I remember fondly my time playing with Lords of Magic when it first came out. What absolutely stood out in that game was the voice acting and the background music: the game sucked me in and kept me there. But if you think you've got yourself yet another Heroes of Might and Magic, stop right there. While there are way fewer resources to manage in LoM than in HoMM, and there is barely any upgrading system, the game is complex and unforgiving. If you want an easy ride into varied strategy, pick something else. If you want a challenging game, with a brilliant heroic-fantasy atmosphere, then you should try. Especially if you don't mind old graphics (but you're here reading this review on GOG, so that should be OK, right? ;) "It is said that history becomes legend, as its events recede into the mists of time and that memories grow dimmer in the slumber of peace."
