My original favorite game

I've played a lot of games over the years, and forgotten and discarded the majority of them. But I still have the CD for this game (on which it is titled Relentless - I guess they felt it needed a tough name for the US release?). I've never let it go, because back when I was young, this was the first game that really captured me. I'd had fun with lots of games before LBA, but this was the first one that really made me fall in love with its world and characters and story. I'm buying it even though I own the CD (and a windows client is out there) just to show love for the game and signal that it still has fans! It's an action RPG built on 90's controls, so some aspects will probaby seem clunky today, but if you can look past that you'll get a great story revolving around quirky characters, unfolding on a world that is both whimiscal and darkly reminiscent of Earth history. The music is truly superb. Don't miss it!

Classic action adventure game

Few games hold up to our fond memories of them, but LBA is still as charming and fun as it was when I first played it. The controls are simple and intuitive that they do not distract from the game. The graphics were never mind-blowing, but they were colorful and the simple character design added to the charm. If you have not played LBA, it is worth the purchase. The story will keep you playing for hours at time. Do yourself the favor and add LBA to your collection!

Skip this one, go play the sequel

I always wanted to play this game as a kid, and never had the chance. This was truly one of the worst over-appreciated games I've ever played. I can only guess the praising reviews are caused by nostalgia goggles. The controls are awful. I can't find the words to describe how uncomfortable it is to play this game. It's ridiculously hard, and not at all rewarding. The plot is boring and all of the characters are plain and forgettable. ---MY EXPERIENCE--- I started playing it. I was trying to figure out everything by myself. I had no idea what to do for a long time, and used a walkthrough. Then I just kept playing while using the walkthrough because it was so hard. It was so ridiculously difficult still, so I just watched playthroughs on YouTube. It was so boring that I just kept skipping through the videos until the end, and found it very lacking. ---THE PLOT--- The plot is so generic. It's the old "things are bad, and you're the only one who can change it because you're special". There never is a reason for why you're special. There is not a single moment that makes you feel like you're the hero everyone say you are. I was so surprised by it, because I always heard this game's plot is amazing. I imagine it just gets mixed with the sequel. ---PLAY THE SEQUEL--- Just go straight to playing the sequel. You won't miss anything. The little there is to know is explained at the beginning, and then it's as if everything occurs in completely different story than that of the first one. The sequel is very much worth playing. It's fun, beautiful, interesting. It has charm and humor that the first game is severely lacking. It's the only installment that is worth your time.

Les Terribles

Been on my "to-do" for over 20 years, ever since first seeing it in a game magazine but never got around to do a full playthrough until few days ago. Let me tell you this game certainly has what they used to call "charm" or "soul" back in the day. In short that means the sum is greater than the parts its made of. Stylized visuals are so well done, as is UI, controls, music, movies, animations and story. It's all very likable and appealing. But... (a big fat one) is that all that is soaked into incredibly repetitive, punishing, tedious gameplay mechanic which overshadows everything else. Even as hard-core completionist I battled real hard to finish the game, especially in the first day. All starts with moronic save system which auto-saves your mistakes. It's just a single save, akin to a rouge-like. Only real way to combat this is via file explored and manually backing up / restoring "S????".LBA save file back and forth during gameplay (excessive Alt+Tab). No real way to avoid it due to horrifyingly done combat (with respawning enemies once you re-enter the area). Expect to get stun-lucked and shoot to death from beyond the screen a lot! Without afore-mentioned save scumming you'll end up in a mental institution in no time. In rare cases where you manage to get a first shoot in - expect to miss more than not because there is no aiming, only eyeballing on your part. Next irritation will come from running mechanic where if you hit an object your will bounce off in a too long animation while taking damage as cherry on top. Traversing endless map screens quickly is highly discouraged by design. Final nail is scarce of player guidance on what to do (or go) next. Enjoy very tedious backtracking and speaking to every NPC in the game while encountering respawned enemies and hitting every obstacle in the way. I used a walkthrough. Beaks most rules of gameplay design. Intended for younger and inexperienced audience who have the time and will for these kind of things.
