Good NAM game, if you like stealth.

The time this came out, there was another game called "Vietcong" which got much more attention and better reviews than this piece of software here ever got. Although "Vietcong" was a good game in it's presentation and everything, it was rather linear and scripted. LoS:V throws your character into the jungle (mostly as a lone wolf - unlike "Vietcong") and you are free to explore the levels as you see fit to survive and fulfill the missions. No, it's not an open world game, but you don't have to follow a scripted path as well. The graphics have been pretty decent at the time this came out, even though it was an budget title, which you'll probably notice at some spots, but another big plus that always got me deep into this game, is the great atmosphere and the pretty good, although limited soundtrack. To not make it even longer than it already is, just let me say that this has to be one of my favourite games when it comes to vietnam themed games and if you like stealth gameplay and do not expect a AAA quality game, this one is recommended.

A hidden unperfect jewel, 3 or 4 stars

I don´t own the game here, but I played it many years ago. Same as KSE user review here Vietcong got much more attention when also in my opinion was equally flawed but in different aspects. Vietnam Line of Sight wasn´t scripted like the MOH games of that time, was more about stealth, and I need to say the scenaries were MUCH better than the ones included in Vietcong. Line of Sight was one of the first titles ever I seen with so many trees all over, that was a Jungle, and not a corridor full of scripts like Vietcong or Men of Valor were. The main problem with Line of Sight that interferes with a 4 star is that the AI was sometimes too clumsy or too efficient (but I need to say Men of Valor or Vietcong suffered exactly from the same issue), and that somehow lacks some more "war" levels instead of just stealth, but the experience of being in a jungle, and have different options to approach the enemy, not many but enough made it a very compelling game to consider, it may not be perfect, but is different and did some things very well. I will probably buy it again here very soon.

Disappointing

I wanted to like this game but it just has too many flaws. The one which can not be forgiven is the stealth part. The game has a lot of foliage which provides cover but it mostly hinders only the player, the AI opponents seem to see right through it. The game quickly reduces itself to the cycle: you get killed but learn where did the opponent hide, load the game, kill that one, move further and repeat... When I played a bit with cheats at times I got shot by enemies which were too far to be seen through a sniper scope :) This may be needed to cover AI deficiencies and up the difficulty level but it "killed" this game for me. There are several bugs (though I haven't found any really game-breaking), starting with the tutorial where I got killed by the booby trap while the game assured me that this is impossible ;) Most irritating error concerns the other american soldier who at times stops following the "player character" (what forces you to manually move him to the extraction point, which is boring). One mission seemed impossible to finish as the character I was playing was unable to pick up the documents which were one of the objectives, fortunately when I switched soldiers the other could do it. The levels were often hard to navigate, the compass pointed to the next objective in a straight line, often running through impassable terrain, which was not clearly marked as such. Oh, and the fact that I couldn't load the game by double-clicking irritated me each time my muscle memory made me try it ;) My last complaint is the story, which is just cliche, you forget it instantly. I saw the game as a string of random missions, I don't even remember the names of the soldiers in the team... I advise everyone to do a solid research before buying this game, as it may not be what you expect.

Decent, but has some big issues.

My dad used to play this when I was a kid, so I really wanted to say this was a hidden gem, but there are some glaring issues that hold back what otherwise would have been a very good budget shooter. Line of Sight: Vietnam is a game that tries to take a stealth focused approach to its combat and level design. Many enemies begin unaware of the player's presence and it can be pretty fun to creep around the jungle and pick off enemies with a sniper rifle. The game also in theory allows a "guns blazing" approach where the player can use captured enemy weapons like AK and SKS rifles along with the usual M-16s, M-60s and so on. However, the reason why I say "in theory" is because this game is way too hard for such an approach to be viable. If you get hit once or twice, you are dead. This would be fine if not for the fact that enemies can see you right through the folliage and sometimes even from beyond the distance fog and shoot you with pinpoint accuracy. This frequently turns sections of the game into tedious trial and error where you just have to spam and load quicksaves repeatedly. The foliage frequently obscures the player's vision making these sections even more annoying, as well. Aside from those issues, the game is actually pretty solid. The player is able to issue some basic commands to the AI partner, which actually has decent AI and can often hold its own against enemies. The shooting and overall controls feel good and the graphics were decent for the time period, especially for a low budget title. It is because of these things that the game comes very close to being worth recommending, but the insane difficulty and poor design decisions hold it back. As a result, the game is only worth checking out if you are curious.
