Fun and Pretty but has Issues

Do NOT pay full price for this, totally not worth it, and GoG full price is way over competitor for some reason. I paid $2 on crazy sale here, totally worth it. The graphics, sound, voice acting, ambiance, etc are all good and make for a fun play time. It is linear, so there is no exploration, but that's typical of a shooter game, but no jump, which feels forced. What throws many is thinking this is Skyrim and not a shooter, and it's not. In fact, it shares some feel with Skyrim in the first person mage spell in each hand setup. There is no money or armor, you only harvest energy to craft more powerful spells. Simple, and could have been elegant, but then it falls down. The crafting is terribly explained, has missing stats, missing info, and in many cases makes no sense. Watching a 30 min fan video on it helped, but not totally, and pointed out the UI was DOWNGRADED from the original that had more info! What? You combine things and get random instead of logical results. You use an upgraded component and it makes no more powerful a spell than the original part. Some things are totally inconsistent, like fire ray has very short range but ice ray is very long (range is NOT a stat shown...). You can't swap hands, attack animation is always right hand, but you can swap buttons, which is good because default is reverse of the screen which is disconcerting. Like other games, no save, only respawn checkpoints. No real penalty for dying. You can't jump, but you can fall down a cliff and die. Poor design choice as there is no warning. Once you get past the irritation of the design issues, mostly in the crafting, you sit back and just throw chance to the wind, manage to make better spells, and go back to having fun nuking things. And the game play really is fun, but too simple to pay more than a few bucks given the annoyances. I don't like shooters, I like this.

Thought worse... still boring

So, gonna keep this short: the game isn't that ...bad (Reading the review, it seems like one of the worst games ever made)... still, it is... boring, and only interesting in the first two hours. Basically, while having a different range of elements and types of attack, the moment you discover the first, like, three, the fun ends: that's it, you've seen all the game has to offer. A shame, really, since the Idea behind was technically sound and the graphic compartment isn't that bad (the design, though... brrrr) So, yup. Extremely discounted? it's a maybe. Full price? Aw, hell no.

Install Wininet with winetricks

This is a favourite game of mine that ran terribly on my ps4. Still, I wanted to play it on my linux gaming rig so I bought it here. For a while it crashed on new-game, so i resigned myself to waiting for proton updates to make it work. Little did I know that it was only missing a winetrick, so I thought I'd leave this review for anyone in the same boat. As for the game itself, it's graphically excellent, plays well on a decent gaming pc and has enough of a story to justify wielding intense spellcraft. Give it a try if you're bored, but it isn't for those expecting a completely polished game, as the price indicates. Have an open mind and you'll enjoy it.

generic spells

There's many good things about this game. It's very linear but this can be delt with if the base game is good. Sadly it's not. For a game boasting about being entirely focused on magic it does nothing with it. This is mainly because of the crafting system that the implemented in the game. Although you would think that its not a terrible idea at first, by time you get to the second boss you will relise it absolutly destories this game. At the very start your attacks are missle, lobbed bomb, and ray for your main attack, and thats it, you'll never get any other attack that could be remotely interesting. Aside from your main attack you get an aoe attack and a block. These have no varriation on how the attack effect is like your main attack Even the diffrent types of elements you use can not make up for this. from the very start you get fire which is the best combat type meaning theres litterly no reason to use any other besides to make your fire spell more effective (even though it will kill everyone besides bosses and upgraded enemies easily). Then you have the mixed spells. Whenever I relized that this existed I was ecstatic I thought that this game might not actully be a waste of my money. but even this mechanic is heavily flawed. First off it takes wayyyyyyyy to long to get to this point. (about 4-6 hours) and the pat off is not worth it. In total there are 12 mixed spells. THERE IS ONLY 12 IN A GAME 100% FOCUSED ON BADASS MAGIC. They are also rather generic and uninspired. IMO if you're going to release a game thats based on magic go wild with your imagination. Most people who would buy the game are those who have an itch for magic in games and have already used these basic spells in countless games and they want to see new interesting things. Not a game based around the same 3 generic spells. Lichdom is possibly a good game if they never went with the poorly designed crafting system.

Could be fun - just isn't

The game is not paused when you are in the inventory- I just found out the hard way. In general this game could be enjoyble, but there are too many let-downs. So the gameplay is like this: You are a mage and fight monsters - a simple FPS. The leveldesign is pretty but boring, because you just move along a corridor. 100% linear. You collect runes and combine them into new spells. The problem ist the devs had to make a manual after the game was released, because there a no good in-game explanations. And there are so many details, where the designer just screwed things up. And its mostly the mechanics like the inventory issue mentioned above. There is some sort of story, but its just loosly attached to this FPS which is fine with me. I prefer straightforward shooters like Doom. I really would like to give this a positive review, because I have a soft spot for these kind of games, but it's just such a mess. Some of the big cons: - fixed save points (I hate that) - Only one save slot (no going back to an earlier state) - Game not paused when in inventory - Boring Leveldesign (and I mean boring not pretty) Pros: - Somewhat original idea - Nice Graphics - The spellcrafting, although it really needs time to get into it
