Description
As a powerful wizard, you start by ruling a small nation as you plot to take over the world! Rule over seven diverse races, from the spider-riding Dwarves to the decadently corrupt Regency, and from shapeshifting Theria to nomadic Goblins. Explore a vast fantasy world, expand by building more cities, battle the armies of rival wizards, and cast earth-shattering enchantments to ensure your victory.

Leylines is a 4X game, a turn-based strategy game of exploration and conquest. Features include:
  • Fast gameplay that avoids micromanagement.
  • Seven unique races with each their own tech tree; no shared units with slightly different stats. Over 180 units in total, including summons and customizable hero units.
  • Over 90 diverse spells. Clone enemy units, deploy ghosts to reduce enemy morale, cast tidal waves to move ships around, and use illusion to disguise your units as something else. Plus fireballs, of course.
  • Tactical terrain. Jungle and mountains are impassable to most units, and desert will damage them. Build watchtowers and explosives on the map, and use your magic to move mountains.
  • Atmospheric soundtrack by Royal Holloway composer Nikolas Sideris, known from games such as Resonance, Diamonds in the Rough, and A Tale of Two Kingdoms.
  • Multiplayer support, locally with hotseat and/or splitscreen.
  • Achievements and a scenario editor is also included.

v1.5 did not work on Linux for me

At first the game wouldn't launch for various reasons related to shared objects. The game's start.sh script did not seem to be using the bundled *.so files. Then after working around that, one shared object wasn't bundled and had to be installed separately. Once those issues were worked around, the game did launch and was technically playable. However, I was unable to cast spells during gameplay, so while it was playable it was not functioning as one would have expected.

Nice little 4X-lite with no ambition

When I first saw this game on Steam I have been incited, foolishly waiting for something like "Master of Magic spiritual successor". And I couldn't resist and bought it there. Well, the game looks nice for an indie title made by only a couple of persons, but it's literally everything that's good in it. Be sure, there's not much interesting choices here or strategically deep gameplay. The game is like shallowed-down Master of Magic mixed with some traits of Warlords. In brief, this is an entertaining for a couple of evenings before you return to the more valuable fantasy strategy games like aforementioned MoM, Warlords of HoMM.
