If you’ve already played the original LEGO City Undercover on Wii U, then there is little reason to pick up this re-release. However, if you were one of the many who missed it the first time around then LEGO City Undercover remains a hilarious riff on police procedurals, built upon a GTA-for-juniors open world blueprint, and stuffed with enjoyable side missions and collectibles to hunt down. The addition of split-screen play, cursory in its execution as it may be, only makes the game more appealing to players who would prefer to experience LEGO City Undercover with a friend riding shotgun. And what's a good police story without a partner in crime-fighting?

A Sum Less Than The Parts

While the game is rather mediocre for a large budget franchise and felt like it overstayed its welcome. Considering barely over a quarter of people are making it past chapter 3 (of 15), I'm not alone in that assessment. While it has been done in the structure of a GTA game, it feels sterile. While it is generally marketed at a younger audience, the large number of cultural references/jokes means that the person that would get the most out of the game would be middle-aged looking for a casual game that likes chasing 100% completion (there are a *lot* of collectibles/mini-games). It is one of the few games that manages to be consistently humorous without beating a joke to death. The game itself suffers from numerous game design issues. Nothing that is a show stopper, but constant irritants that suggest not a lot of thought was put in to the gameplay. For example; you have a health bar, but when your health runs out... you just pop up a few steps away. Why bother even having health if death doesn't do anything? Controls are inconsistent across various contexts; sometimes Enter is 'Yes', other times it is the jump button. The jump button is accelerate in vehicles, even though vehicles can also jump. On top of this, as others have mentioned, it is a so-so PC port suffering from instability, frame rate issues, and no mouse support. Don't fret about the lack of mouse support though. While it does make the game a bit awkward in spots, the game is more than forgiving enough to get by on keyboard. Like noted earlier, nothing so bad that it is a show stopper, just uncouth irritants. If you have a generous budget or really love the LEGO franchise, don't worry about the price; otherwise probably should wait for a sale.

Disappointing

An open-world game set in Lego city with split-screen multiplayer, what's not to like? Well, the controls for one thing; absolutely dreadful: way too many buttons, some of which are confusingly labeled and don't natively work with controllers (I don't have and XBox or DualShock controller, so maybe that's my fault). After fiddling for what felt like ages with the bindings for my controller and clicking 'Apply', I go back to the game and the controls don't work. I check the bindings and lo and behold, they've been wiped clean and I have to try again, with the same result. In the end, I had to use JoyToKey to get a somewhat workable control setup, but even then singleplayer mode does not work, because every time I push a button on my controller, the key binding menu opens up, I guess because it realizes I've plugged in a controller but that there are no keybindings (again, because it refuses to save the settings). The key bindings are a total mess in other ways as well: the jump button for the on-foot sections is the same as the accelerate button for vehicle sections, you can only bind one key and you can't leave any keys unbound or else you can't leave the keybind menu. Of course, the game also apparently doesn't save any progress during missions, so I've played through the beginning section 4 times now. If my 4-year-old wasn't so keen on this game, I wouldn't even bother.
