Legend of Grimrock is a dungeon crawling role playing game with an oldschool heart mated with modern execution. A group of prisoners are sentenced to certain death by exile to the secluded Mount Grimrock for vile crimes they may or may not have committed. Unbeknownst to the captives, the mountain is riddled with ancient tunnels, dungeons and tombs built by crumbled civilizations of days long past. If they ever wish to see daylight again and reclaim their freedom, the ragtag group of prisoners must form a team and descend through the mountain, level by level.
The game brings back an oldschool challenge with highly tactical real-time combat and grid-based movement, devious hidden switches and secrets as well as deadly traps and horrible monsters. Legend of Grimrock puts an emphasis on puzzles and exploration, and the wits and perception of the player are more important tools than even the sharpest of swords would be. And if you are a hardened dungeon crawling veteran and you crave an extra challenge, you can arm yourself with a stack of grid paper and turn on the Oldschool Mode, which disables the luxury of the automap! Are you ready for some classic dungeon-crawling first person perspective party-based RPG action? Are you ready to venture forth and unravel the mysteries of Mount Grimrock?
Use the Dungeon Editor to build entirely new adventures and challenges for other players to solve!
Explore a vast network of ancient tunnels, discover secrets, and find a way to survive in the perilous dungeons of Mount Grimrock.
Cast spells with runes, craft potions with herbs, and fight murderous monsters with a wide variety of weapons.
Create a party of four characters and customize them with different races, classes, skills, and traits.
Pure-blooded dungeon crawling game with grid-based movement and thousands of squares, riddled with hidden switches, pressure plates, sliding walls, floating crystals, forgotten altars, trapdoors, and more.

So yeah, this is "Game Of The Decade" for me. It's pretty much perfect in every way a good old-school dungeon crawler can be. It's been a long time since a developer has released such a solid, quality game.
To put it simple, the combat system and the large amount of enemies is a deal breaker for me.
Legend of Grimrock wants to emulate the old school feeling, but far from it. Exploration wise, it is (just) ok, but unfortunately, there are too many monsters and they are way too puwerful.
Basically, your entire party of 4 can barely survive two skeletons face to face in the first levels. Some people might say "use the grid to your advantadge", but no classic dungeon crawler forces you to literally flee from monsters continuously. Eye of The Beholder, you can fight enemies without kitting for the most part. Lands Of Lore, you can face-to-face enemies from the beginning. Dungeon Master, you can do the same. But Legend of Grimrock is different, and for the worst, so most of the time you will see yourself focusing 80% on combat and scared of enemies than actual exploration.
Also, the environments are too monotonous and soon you will get tired of the same kind of atmosphere that will be repeated ad-nausem.
A game that does this well is Dungeon of the Dragon Knight, where combat is secondary, doable and entertaining, exploration feels rewarding and environments change often.
I'm up to about the 4th level....and loving this game....sure it's heard it's fair share of abuse from me yelling at it cause I died.....but I'm still having fun. Some ppl may not like the fact that u have to ration health/poison/disease potions out and watch carefully which potions u make and how much food u have left....but I rekon it makes it more fun and interesting. I really like the magic system.....it's not just learn a spell and click the button....I'm really enjoying it. Most games quickly bore me and I end up finishing them eventually.....but this game keeps me coming back for more.
Yes the game is hard, yeas there are some imbalances and yes getting through fights is no small feat and requires you to drink potions more than a drunk. This is a game for hard core gamers missing the oldies like Eye of the Beholder. Those dungeons crawl are repetitive, yanking chains can become tedious after a while but for some reason the game still is fun even if it is gonna cost you a few hairs. I can understand why some people might not like this type of game, Legend of Grimrock is an anachronism and by today's standards it might come off as a sucky game for some. If you among those who miss the old AD& D games of the 90's, this game is for you and don't complain about the repetitive and hard gameplay, even that has been carbon copied from the 90's.
