Legend of Grimrock is a dungeon crawling role playing game with an oldschool heart mated with modern execution. A group of prisoners are sentenced to certain death by exile to the secluded Mount Grimrock for vile crimes they may or may not have committed. Unbeknownst to the captives, the mountain is riddled with ancient tunnels, dungeons and tombs built by crumbled civilizations of days long past. If they ever wish to see daylight again and reclaim their freedom, the ragtag group of prisoners must form a team and descend through the mountain, level by level.
The game brings back an oldschool challenge with highly tactical real-time combat and grid-based movement, devious hidden switches and secrets as well as deadly traps and horrible monsters. Legend of Grimrock puts an emphasis on puzzles and exploration, and the wits and perception of the player are more important tools than even the sharpest of swords would be. And if you are a hardened dungeon crawling veteran and you crave an extra challenge, you can arm yourself with a stack of grid paper and turn on the Oldschool Mode, which disables the luxury of the automap! Are you ready for some classic dungeon-crawling first person perspective party-based RPG action? Are you ready to venture forth and unravel the mysteries of Mount Grimrock?
Use the Dungeon Editor to build entirely new adventures and challenges for other players to solve!
Explore a vast network of ancient tunnels, discover secrets, and find a way to survive in the perilous dungeons of Mount Grimrock.
Cast spells with runes, craft potions with herbs, and fight murderous monsters with a wide variety of weapons.
Create a party of four characters and customize them with different races, classes, skills, and traits.
Pure-blooded dungeon crawling game with grid-based movement and thousands of squares, riddled with hidden switches, pressure plates, sliding walls, floating crystals, forgotten altars, trapdoors, and more.

I purchased the Mac version and love it. It plays great on my 2013 Macbook Air.
This game is reminiscent of Eye of the Beholder, Dungeon Master, or the old Bard's Tale and Wizardry games, except brought up to date with a great UI and interesting real-time mechanics. I generally prefer turn-based systems, but this one adds a frantic quality to the fights. The game is a solid challenge that will reward smart tactics as well as puzzle solving. If you're a fan of old-school first person RPGs, this is a must buy.
After 4 hours of play I have to say that this is a great game. Rich chargen system, good tactical combat and mindbending puzzles. It's the first game in a long time that forced me to think while playing (and I'm not an FPS lover).
Everybody should give it a try.
This game is incredibly addictive, good old fun. No gimmicks here folks, this game is nothing but action and puzzles. The environments and ambient sounds are beautifully done and every second spent in the game feels like you are in a real dungeon endlessly searching for a way out. The game rewards explorers and those willing to spend a little time looking with rare treasure and equipment, so far I have been having a blast learning the combat system and playing around with my different characters (I am playing with 2 lizard rogues, 1 minotaur warrior and 1 human mage atm on the hard difficulty). I've already died multiple times and saving frequently is a must.
You will not regret this game! It is very fun to play, never played any of the old dungeon master games but I see what all the fuzz is about, very addictive, very enjoyable right off the get go.
This is one of a very small number of games that I have played where the atmosphere is perfect. It is only surpassed by King's Field: The Ancient City, in this regard.
This game also has the nicest mix of innovative puzzles I've seen in a long time. The items are well spread out and make management fun.
All around this is a great game. It is only lacking in plot and character interaction. However, rather than shove in some half baked system for these things they did the right thing and totally cut out interactions while maintaining a plot that is bare bones but just sufficient.
Legend of Grimrock is a throwback to games like Dungeon Master, Stonekeep, and Dungeon Hack. It is to Eye of the Beholder as Torchlight is to Diablo II, and let me tell you - it is a lot of fun.
Naturally, I made my own characters and turned off the automap (they call it "old-school mode"), and became involved with the story right away. Like in Ultima Underworld, you are thrust naked into an abyss full of monsters for a crime you may or may not have committed, and must use your brain and brawn to escape alive. There are many wonderful secrets to discover, spells and alchemy to figure out, and lots of monsters to fight. I really loved the graphics, and discovered that right clicking and dragging allows you to "free look" around rooms. Releasing the button gently centers your view again. Another thing which impressed me was the way it handled leveling up, with your choice of class-based skills to pick and choose, giving the game pretty good replay value. I would also love to see a level creation kit, so that we can make our own.
I did find the game to be a lot easier than EOB, however, and thus did not give it the full 5 out of 5 stars, but trust me when I say that you could do a lot worse for fifteen bucks.
