Disappointing Game, Great Story
To be honest three stars may be a bit over zealous, it probably deserves less. Let me qualify that. I loved the 'Legacy of Kain' games when they came out, and now after all these years, I had a crazy yearning to play them again. 'Blood Omen' is pretty good considering its age, Soul Reaver had some boring lack lustre combat, but was still a really good game, I was surprised that it still stands up, in fact it was probably more difficult than a lot of modern games, because it didn't hold your hand and made you think, and it had a great story. When I finished it I was excited to dive straight into the sequel, and this is where it got disappointing. The game doesn't work unless you limit the framerate to about 60 fps, enabling v-sync in the set up menu doesn't do this and you'll need a third party tool, Nvidia Profile Inspector works well for this. It took a fair bit of trial and error and internet searches, and trying some weird things before I got it working, and everytime I tried it to see if it had worked, I had to watch the unskippable cut scene at the beginning, which is long... (tip: have fraps or something running when you first boot it up to check the framerate, if it's over 60, shut it down and knock the fps down, don't do what I did, hindsight is great). Now to the actual gameplay, the combat is just as lacklustre, but there's a lot more of it, and it's really boring, especially when the game throws up barriers to force you to fight a room full of enemies, it's so tedious. The areas are quite spread out, there are a fair few cut scenes, but few save points and no warp gates, running back and forward over the same ground, having to have boring fights all of the way, and not being able to save the game until you've fought your way through a new area, done the big puzzle area, and fought your way all through the same area, back to the save point. This game does not stand up today. Have I already said it's tedious, still if you like LoK, it's a must!
