Description
And The Dead were made flesh and dwelt among us. In flesh ripped and pocketed in running sores and the terror of our age our bodies cannot staunch the flow of darkness nor stem the tides of death. We are food but not for long.

There is enough fire power stacked here to blow them soulless husks to hell and back; and we are giving it them all. The towns and cities are burning and the end's a long time coming. Enjoy it while you can.

• Full 3D Environment with full 360 degree rotational view.
• Mission based scenarios for full immerse play.
• Massive numbers of enemies at any one time.
• Controversial horror setting.
• Gory hack and slash first person action.
• Incredible Painted backdrops.

Due to the age of the title, it currently does not support network multiplayer.

The victim of lazy reviewers ;)

This game had a few bad reviews when it was released, mostly because of lazy game magazine workers who wanted to meet the deadline. From reading of these articles, it was clear that the reviewers didn't bother even to finish the first level (screenshots in most magazines were from the first level only as they are here on GOG) because this wasn's one of these overhyped big titles everyone knew months before the release. Instead it was just one of many games competing in the overcrowded PC market in 1997 which nobody awaited. At first, this is a very deserving 7 out of 10 title, not a smash hit, but I would call it a hidden gem bacause of how unknown this game is. It has a great horror atmosphere supported by one of the best game soundtracks in history. Each of the levels has it's own theme and the music will give you shivers with it's pleothra of ambient sounds and dark rhythms. The levels are huge, probably the largest in any FPS game I know, which is great but also a disadvantage because of the lack of automapping. There are only pixelated maps on some walls which usually only cover small part of the mission. This is the game's biggest flaw, together with some traps (if you can't activate the switch by pressing, try shooting into it - yes, it doesn't make sense). You'll spend some time wandering around and trying to figure where to go. There are several environments where the game takes part. You'll start at a big city and continue to a closed shopping mall, sewers, scientific laboratory and even underworld. Some areas are very dark and require finding a light and batteries. You'll be accompanied by a group of other troopers who have weak firepower and who are getting killed quickly, but they are not necessary to finish the level. There are many original weapons which make nice sounds. Go to "Options" and set the game to fullscreen at first, the default is smaller widescreen. Play it alone in a dark room. Volume high. Heating off. That's it.

Average but interesting.

People sure love to hate on this game like it killed their dog or something lol. It's just an average 2.5D FPS of the era with zombies. AI is stupid sure but so many were bitd so... Doesn't redefine gaming as you know it but it's worth a few bucks. Thank you GOG for giving me a chance to own it since it never reached NA, and thanks to zjeraar for telling me it had come out. :)

Definitively no "good old game"

This game was awful when it got released back in '97 and it still is. Age alone doesn't transform a terrible game into a "good old game". Graphics, sound design and controls are really bad, the AI is abysmal and the leveldesign is uninspired and boring. This game was released at the same time as Shadow Warrior and Quake 2 and over a year after Duke Nukem 3D and Quake, all of them great games with (for the time) excellent graphics, features and playability. Play some of these instead and forget about this utter abomination.

Mmmhgggrhh... Difficult one to review

Yup, that sound does describe it : Last Rites has a lot of things going on but all of them leaves a weird taste. As a FPS, it is all right : it does have some interesting level design choice (both good and bad but ALL of the maps are gigantic and twisted), weapons that sometime just feel right, other times they are completely off, enemy's AI dead ( pun intended) and the engine does have a charm to it, although completely outdated even then. So, is it worth it? Believe or not, I say give it a chance : although the network doesn't work anymore, just the single campaign does have really good ideas and some fun shooting, the level are few but big ( and it is also one of the game bad sides, since it can be really confusing) and overall fun to explore. Plus the story (yes, it does have it some little narrative event, so to speak) is interesting and does give some 80'/90' vibes to it, accompanied by some really surprising and awesome soundtrack (which is weirdly the greatest part of this game and without really any downside). Just wait to a discount... and don't wait until you're dead to try it out! (YUCK)

Welcome to 1997

I can remembering me, reading one of the magazines where upcoming first person shooters were presented. There were Shadow Warrior, Prey, Blood, Exhumed and Rites. I never forgot this game, but i was wondering why i could not buying the game in my country. Luckily, here it is! It's good for 1997 and for old-school Horror-Games. :-)
