Gorgeous Spectacle of Flips and Bullets

What an absolute treat to find this on GOG. I'm not going to wax poetic about how good this game is because game "journalists" are paid to do that. I'm just going to tell you the following: Gameplay: The motorcycle handling mechanics are awesome. If you played Line Rider or similar vehicle-based flash games as a child, you'll feel right at home with Laika. The bike is consistent to control and you can pull off really neat sequences. The upgrades feel extremely impactful and the checkpoints being optional is amazing for people who want to really challenge themselves. There's a lot of freedom to be found in this game, which is exactly the kind of feeling that a game centered around riding a motorcycle should elicit. My only gameplay gripe is that you can't use 1,2,3,4 for selecting weapons and it seems you must use the mouse wheel. This is an extremely minor complaint. Visuals: The artwork is unbelievably gorgeous for this pricepoint. There's not much for me to say, just watch the trailer. It's consistently beautiful. Sound: The music is incredible and its soft nature is a stark contrast to the grim and bloodied environments you navigate throughout. The weapon sounds are impactful. Story: This is what my wife and I call a "Revenge-o"; a story where the plot is driven by the protagonist's need for revenge. After your brother and nephew are savagely murdered by birds, you take up arms to wage very bloody war against them. The gruesome introduction to the story really fills you with a desire to kill all the birds and makes every kill more satisfying. The writing is very well done. I have found myself laughing at the jokes and nearly crying at the adorable and realistic way that the protagonist interacts with her child, a child which she is terrified will be forced to grow up too soon by the harsh world they inhabit.

Proven fun with new action

Laika is a fresh new game I have never played before. I love the classic motorcross flash games. They have been redone many times without new ideas so they never succeeded the originals. Laika not only succeeds in improving the formula, it's also something different from all the games I have. It's well made with beautiful attention to detail like dust being pulled up behind the bikes tire, the bullet shells smoking and blood splattering over the character when driving through it. The levels are also very well designed. They are hard because of this new mix of action and motor cross gameplay I haven't had before. But the checkpoints are very fair and the gameplay controls really well! So the game doesn't get boring and the first boss I met was quite fun and had a cool dark vibe. The story is very dark. First I thought it's like mad max, but it's darker. Gives the game character and an enjoyable atmosphere. So that's fine with me especially with the contrast of that extreme action gameplay. I could tell you about how the game plays, but I feel that would be spoilers. All the techniques flow really nicely into each other and feel really cool and fun to pull off. You can even turn the bikes direction left and right. And there is a way to see what angle your bike is rotated in the air in case you loose track because of the explosions on screen. Took me a while to figure that out, but I prefer that over a tutorial. I hate tutorials in games. A crack at the bottom of the thing that shows the angle as an indicator where the bottom is would be neat. When the thing turns red and the floor is tilted it's hard to see the dark smudge on the side to use as an indicator. This game also has some things I don't like: desert levels, dogs and killing birds. But it's just so good that can life with that and without a doubt can give it a max score. Anyway, highly recomment! Really cool new game made by professionals!

Very nice

Back flips on motorbikes, shooting and metroidvania. That is a great combo for a fine game! 5/5 - went in blind and was not dissapointed

Great, but hard.

If you liked Excitebike for the NES, but always wished it had precision gunplay and a post apocolyptic neo-western setting, this is for you.

Absolute frustration at its finest

What others love about this game is what I dislike. I find the controls to be absolutely infuriating. Every few seconds, you hit your head and must start over from a checkpoint. So, while trying to avoid enemy attacks and obstacles, you also have to manage the motorcycle by tilting it forward or backward and switching directions with a button hold. It may have a strong story and a great soundtrack, but I can't be bothered to play it any more. There is an option in the settings to turn off head bumps, but still...not my cup of tea at all. I cannot recommend unless you like frustration.
