Description
LA-MULANA 2 features sprawling ancient ruins, mind-boggling mysteries, untold numbers of items, and terrible enemies woven together to form what is possibly the perfect Metroidvania-style “archaeological ruin exploration action game”.

In LA-MULANA 2, you take on the role of Lumisa Kosugi - daughter of the previous title’s hero - as she explores the ancient ruins of La-Mulana, said to be the cradle of human civilization. Desperate to find the cause of the numerous recent appearances of monsters from the ruins, Lumisa heads to the “other” La-Mulana: the ruins known as Eg-Lana.

Explore the vast ruins comprising multiple field maps, solve mysteries and riddles using the stone tablets and messages you discover along the way, and take out the huge monsters known as “Guardians” as you make your way to the deepest depths of the ruins.

You won’t believe the awesome mystery of Eg-Lana you uncover at the end of your journey...

La-Mulana was known as a “Metroidvania” style game (a 2D action platformer with an emphasis on non-linear exploration). That said, the real core of the game is in deciphering the riddles scattered about the game, and solving the puzzles that exist as part of the ruins.

A classic experience: As with the previous game, La-Mulana 2 will not feature a tutorial or a long-winded sidekick. As a seasoned explorer, it's up to you to discover the secrets hidden within the ruins and find the truth within.

Explore on your terms: By deciphering cryptic text on the monuments scattered throughout the ruins, the player can slowly unravel the riddle of the ruins. Which part of the sprawling underground to tackle, and in what order, is up to you. Sometimes you will need to use changes in background, mysterious sounds, the strength of enemies or the sneakiness of traps to detect a change in their surroundings.

A colossal adventure: We have designed a variety of zones, and have created a mystery deep enough to encompass a gigantic cave system. This is a very large scale indie title. We predict newcomers to the series would probably clear the game in 20 to 30 hours. Because of the non-linear nature of Eg-Lana, La-Mulana 2 will have plenty of replayability.

New horrors, new weapons: Plenty of ferocious and terrifying monsters and guardians stand in your way in the depths of this new underground network. Fortunately, there will also be an arsenal of tools and weapons to help you on your journey.

Widescreen Support: The first La-Mulana was a remake of a retro-styled game that ran in a 4:3 aspect ratio, which made widescreen support impossible. For La-Mulana 2, NIGORO is developing the game's areas and rooms with a 16:9 aspect ratio in mind, making it perfect for widescreen TVs and monitors.

The question we’re asking ourselves is “How can 2D games take advantage of recent developments in technology?”
  • Become an adventurer and explore sprawling ancient ruins
  • Gather hints to solve the various mysteries of your adventure
  • Dive into the action as you fight off tough enemies seeking to stop your progress
  • A detailed and beautifully dot-rendered world
  • Seven main weapons and over ten sub-weapons
  • Over 60 items of various types to help you explore the ruins
  • Over 20 apps to install on your trusty adventurer’s tablet, the “Mobile Super X 3”
  • Includes reference book with over 200 monsters and other characters in the game

Nice sequel, controls are still cancer

It's pretty much like the frist one, some polish here and there and a couple of QQL changes...and the jumping controls are still as infuriating as ever. Especially with an XBox-Controller. The d-pad isn't used at all, literally. You can't even rebind it.

Can't see the forest for the trees.

There is a surprising variety of experiences you can have playing the La-Mulana games, and at the very least you don't have to worry about it being 2005 so that your only option is to play the freeware original in Japanese with exactly two half-finished machine-translated guides as your only reference materials. That being said, having experienced that, it was still a significantly richer experience than this new sequel is. Every La-Mulana game has its issues. The freeware release with its unwieldy save system, grapple gloves, ROM carts, etc., the remake with its super-OP bosses and complete lack of retro aesthetic, and now the sequel with its hordes of exquisitely crafted B.S. unfunny and unfun "gotcha" moments. Nigoro did manage to successfully streamline LM2 somewhat, easing you into the game better, but seemingly in an attempt to maintain the notorious difficulty in the face of simpler enemies and puzzles, the level design is now completely riddled with invisible traps at every turn. Moreso than the original, certainly. Picture the Hell Temple from LM1, except instead of being designed to break your spirit it's just to tick you off constantly. Trapdoors that drop you into spikes that bounce you into enemies and force a 10-minute trek back; enemies that bounce you into instadeath "poison lava" pits or inescapable drowning traps; bats that have been deliberately redesigned to blend into the background; overpopulation of basic enemies rather than a sparser but more engaging bestiary; the list goes on. Whether due to time restraints or the schizophrenic nature of its shifted design focus, what we are left with is a game that's a walking identity crisis. Puzzles are more obtuse than cryptic, exploration is more railroaded than open and more punishing than rewarding, and the whole thing is basically all of the frustration La-Mulana is known for with none of the satisfaction that should come with it. It looks and sounds pretty, but that's about it.

The game is a frustrating mess

The puzzles are impossible to solve without outside help and the bosses are the very meaning of frustrating. I quit the game when a boss that should have been fun turned out to be maddening. If you like games that are consistently fun, then don't buy this one.
