Description
Simulation of Aerial Combat and Gallantry in World War I.

Flying north along the road from Lille to bust a German recon balloon. I wave to the foot boys in their muddy trenches. Poor devils. Oh, how they envy me!

Off to the left! Can it be? The scoundrel in the red Fokker! My dear chum Bates signaled that his gun was jammed, but that greedy Hun downed him nonetheless. The Fokker is flying east. Homeward, low on petrol, no doubt. The balloon can wait. This won't take long.

You are a hunter stalking Germany's most celebrated pilots, including the infamous Baron Manfred von Richtofen. Using news and intelligence reports, as well as your own intuition, you track down the 16 men whose successors diminish your own. In the gallant tradition of the ancient knights, you challenge each to determine who is truly World War 1's Ace of Aces.
  • Fly 20 Planes: every major fighter in W.W.I.
  • Navigate with actual mapping of tranches, roads, cities, aerodromes, anti-aircraft guns and more.
  • Accomplish hundreds of missions in 7 categories including ground support, bombing and more.

Historical Game Makes History

I bought Knights of the Sky on release and at the time it was one of my favourites. I remember one morning I decided to play a few missions before school and was so engrossed that I lost track of time and missed attendance. Among the WWI simulators of the time, it doesn't have the same level of charm as Wings or the sophisticated flight model of Red Baron but sits comfortably between the two. You're a career pilot for the Allies (no German campaign) and over the course of the war you'll receive several events between missions. New planes will become available or retired on both sides. Maybe an enemy Ace will challenge you to a duel on your next mission, providing a secondary objective. Rival squad mates will join your squad, achieve promotions, or be tragically killed in action. Each campaign plays a little differently. Your squadron may be transferred to a different aerodrome along the front, or, once you achieve the rank of Captain, you may move it yourself. Your areodrome is your spawn point, which decides your field of operations. Missions range from patrols, bombing enemy bases, to eliminating balloons. Beyond that, you are free to explore the 3D map so far as your fuel tank will let you. This game taught me to manage my throttle to conserve fuel so that I could visit far off Brussels and return to a friendly airstrip. It also taught me to conserve my ammo and the importance of dive bombing. It was simple to learn but challenged me to become a better gamer. A few years ago I loaded up my original disks and ran it in DosBox. Does the game hold up? Frankly, there are simply more modern flight simulators available with improved physics and graphics. Taking off the nostalgia goggles, I found the terrain bland and the polygons blocky. It's functional, though and, as a piece of history, KotS is a worthy title that featured one of the first instances of dial-up multiplayer in a flight sim.

Frustrating

What's wrong with the keyboard controls ? You can barely climb even on full throttle, any rudder movement is jerky and unresponsive, press the key - nothing happens, hold the key down and suddenly the plane leaps around the screen. After 20 minutes of flying 3 different missions I gave up. Not the nostalgia trip I was expecting

Looks great, but ...

I had just fiinished Red Baron 1 which was made in the same year, was very playable and I hoped that this would be similar. The UI and general design are great. The manual itself is worth the money with the art and history. But, I could not get Dosbox configured well enough to make dogfighting possible desipte much goolging, forum reading and config file tests. I've had the same issue with Falcon and Falcon AT, and read of the same issue that affects Wing Commander. So I think the problem is Dosbox, and not this game. Dosbox is just not appropriate for some games.

couldnt hold the candle Wings+Red Baron

Released between Wings and Red Baron ...could both the not hold the candle Wings was more fun, better in sounds, more "feel in" the game - was from 1989 and more an action game. Red Baron 1991 or 1992... a pure sim. great in details, many planes and many many more. KoS was to buy be me for 70 bucks... (most expensive game I have ever paid) as no one did have a floppy disk copy of it ;) The game was ok, was good like so many Microprose Sims (especially Silent Service 1+2), but disappointing after playing the other 2 ones. especially the graphics, missions, gameplay - except the mission to make a photo was a nice realistic thing. ps Their Finest Hour from 1989 lucasfilm was a better sim than his for me.

A classic flight sim

Launched before red Baron and several others this game was launched with the expectation in the 90s that the player(of either the Ms Dos it Amiga versions) would have a controller. Not a mouse. A joystick to be precise, and for those that have one it's a classic. Flight handling is natural and real and would later indoor flight sims of so many and while not the first overall it still stands out as a fantastic addition and offers genuine challenge to survive, thrive, and end the great war above ground and outside a prison cell (and yes captured by enemies or imprisoned by your own are possible.)
