About This Game

Knights of the Chalice is a 2D RPG with turn-based combat for Windows. The game uses the OGL 3.5, the set of rules at the root of Dungeons & Dragons 3.5, a role-playing game from Wizards of the Coast. Create a party of four adventurers, explore the Crimson Coast of Mindrel and fight valiantly against the evil Council of the Slaver Lords, domineering Giants, fiendish Demons and scheming Dragons.

  • Turn-based, party-based tactical combat similar to that found in the old Dark Sun Shattered Lands game made by SSI and in Troika's Temple of Elemental Evil.
  • User-friendly interface. Launch a charge, full-attack or coup-de-grace with a single click - the computer will automatically look for the best option available.
  • Well-developed artificial intelligence. Enemies act as a group and use special actions like Grapple or Charge and tactics like taking a five-foot step before casting Maximised Fireball.
  • Omnipresent help files and clear in-game feedback (a feature also found in Temple of Elemental Evil) on the results of each dice roll, saving throw, attack roll, modifiers, etc.
  • 175 magic spells, most of which were taken from, or inspired by, Wizard of the Coast's open game content. The list of spells is available from the developer's website at http://www.heroicfantasygames.com/ListofSpells.htm.
  • Craft your own weapons and apply enchantments like Wounding, Speed, Flaming Burst and Keen. You can see the list of weapon and armour enchantments at http://www.heroicfantasygames.com/ListofEnchantments.htm.
  • Dozens of feats such as Cleave and Whirlwind Attack. See the list of feats at http://www.heroicfantasygames.com/ListofFeats.htm.
  • Multiple-choice dialogue allowing you to resolve situations in unexpected ways.
  • A large campaign largely inspired by the classic Dungeons & Dragons modules Scourge of the Slave Lords and Against the Giants.
  • Enjoy collecting 117 Galaxy achievements designed to challenge the best tacticians.

Free Demo / Tutorial

Knights of the Chalice Free Demo / Tutorial: this is a unique adventure.

A haunted forest. Strange ruins. The villagers call this place “ Devil’s Lair ”. The ruins may be dead, so they say, but the sinister, malevolent creatures that lurk underneath most certainly are not.

Tightening your packs, you reflect upon this. The devil’s lair, Hah! How could any self-respecting adventurer shy away from the golden opportunity? In this short adventure, the player characters are pre-created and start at level 3.

The forgotten OGL/D&D style CRPG.

This game came out in 2009 and flew under most peoples radar as it was only available via the developers website when Steam had become cemented as the go to place for PC gamers, and GOG was only just starting to gain broader recogntion. It was also a bit dated looking, at a time when retrolooking games were less popular as they are now and people were hungrier for the next 3d innovation. It is a good game though, tough and a bit unfair in that you will have to save and reload a lot as luck is a factor. But so are tactics and knowledge of the rules, so the combat is still enjoyable in my opinion. Therefore i do recommend the game if you like retro CRPG's and D&D/Pathfinder/OGL. In fact, among friends or online communities I sometimes hear asked, 'are there any obscure games of this type that are worth knowing about?' Or something to that effect. And when i do, mention this game. And also Low Magic Age.

Great Retro RPG

Knights of the Chalice is an addicting game that takes you back to the old style of gaming which reminded me of the original Final Fantasy on Nintendo in appearance and plot. With bright colours, a customized party of 4, and a fairly basic story of conquering evil and freeing an oppressed world, this game delivers and is a very fun and rewarding experience. It goes off of the Dungeons and Dragons 3.5 ruleset basically, but is simplified enough for anyone to learn. Of course, there are some things (like resistances to damage and spells for example) that an experienced player will benefit from, but overall there always seemed to be a method of approaching a battle that would either make it easy, a slow grind, or miserable failure. I would have given it 5 stars, but some of the fights started you off in a very difficult and unfair situation, so multiple reloads were needed until you got past the first ambush and were able to set up your defences and counter attacks. Overall though, I very much enjoyed it and will be buying the second game to continue the adventure. This game is a must own for anyone that likes challenging encounters and that retro style that favoured adventure and combat over story and romances!

Almost entirely luck based

This game has all the elements of a good, even great turn based RPG, but almost all the fights - and it's a combat focused game - are almost entirely down to RNG, at least in the early game. Without you doing anything particularly different, you can replay the first battle over and over and each and every time you'll get a completely different result based on the "dice" "rolls" the game uses. And this applies to literally every single fight in the game. It wouldn't be so bad if the percentages the game shows you weren't completely arbitrary, more along the lines of suggestions than any actual hard math. Miss 3 attacks in a row that the game said had a "90%" chance to hit. Hit an enemy with each party member, that the game said had between a 10%-30% chance to hit. The damage seems entirely randomized too, I hit a Vampire with a +1 Silver Longsword with a Warrior that has 18 STR and he deals 4 damage - that is when the game decides my guy should hit him: strike 3 times with 75-90% Hit Chance and miss... Hit the same vampire with my Wizard armed with an iron dagger - with 10% CTH - and my wizard deals 5 damage. Just baffling numbers all around, and it gets **extremely** frustrating when you realize the math doesn't actually follow the rules the game says it does. As it plays right now, this game is a lot more like gambling than it is a role playing game. Yes, I know luck is big part of RPGs, but you can also make up for crappy luck with smart tactics and intelligent approaches. Unfortunately, this game doesn't even allow you to do that: every single enemy, from the brainless zombie to the smartest dragon, instinctively knows to go after my spell casters even when they don't actually do anything to attract aggro. So you just have to hope the enemies miss and your guys hit, otherwise Load Game becomes your most used in-game option. The game would be so, so much better if the behind-the-scenes math would be less random and the game less straight up luck based.

Amazing Game for D&D Fans

This is probably the best tactical combat RPG that exists. It can be a little bit difficult and the first part of the game can be frustrating, since D&D allows level one characters to be killed by a critical hit from a house cat. The game is so much fun, though.

An Honest Appraisal

Kind of frustating, I've played this game for over a 100 hours, you can get killed very easily at the beginning and the end battles are impossible to all intensive purposes without being very very lucky, well most of the time you need to be very lucky... The story line is simple and direct and the game often involves preset battles in which your characters are invariably caught out in ambushes where your poorly positioned and against overwhelming odds. Lacks some balance I would say and definatly a tutorial as well a some good pointers to the vulnarabilitys of PCs and NPCs as much is not covered in the help.
