After many battles, a former kingdom has been divided into many small principalities and earldoms. The king's troops were pushed back into one last royal province, and the rulers of the other provinces waged terrible, destructive wars against one another. The whole land fell into a state of chaos and now the former royal capital itself is under siege by the armies of the rebel lords. You belong to the last remaining group of loyalists, and have been commanded to go to the king in light of the imminent attack.
A conspiracy against the king catapults the captain into a situation where he finds himself responsible for the defence of the last royal province. This is all that remains of the shattered kingdom, which has been torn apart by rivaling lords. And now even the king himself, ensconced in his capital, is threatened by enemy armies. This is the starting point of your Middle Ages adventure.
Now you must win back all those provinces which once belonged to your king.

It has always been one of my favourites. If you can get to grips with how the system works (production chain, layouts, orientation anf feeding of the troops...) you will definately enjoy it if you like city building games with combat.
My main complaint about it (I had it with the original as well) is that there is no option for just free building, to just get a random map and do your thing as a single player. Which is a shame because I don't tend to favour multiplayer much...
This game defintely didn't get enough attention when it was released. It is a very good mixture of both heavy combat-focussed unit management and some build-up-your-own-village part. This package contains both the original game 'The Shattered Kingdom' and the re-release extra content 'The Peasants Rebellion', which basically adds a second campaign, a new building and new troops.
Story/campaign:
The campaign (The Shattered Kingdom) hasn't got a creative story, but it is not very important anyway, because nearly every mission has the same setting: build up your village, kill the enemy. Some missions are 'units only', which means you have to defeat the enemy with the soldiers you get in the beginning without building a base at all. The later missions require a lot of time to finish, eight hours isn't unusual at all. The second campaign (The Peasants Rebellion) has better designed missions and is a little harder, but doesn't come up with really new ideas. The story is continued.
Gameplay:
The build-up part at the beginning of a mission is necessary to create a wide variety of soldiers. When you have a threatening army, you move out to kill the enemy. Unitl then, you have to defeat your village and gather more ressources. That's it. That is what you do every mission. It sounds boring, but it isn't at all, because you always have to make decisions: Where do I build my structures? How do I build the streets in order to connect the houses? Is my mixture of soldiers deadly enough to kill the enemy? Can I deliver enough food so they don't starve?
Sound, graphics, control etc:
The soundtrack is okay for its time, it has some medieval touch. The graphic actually is pretty good, because of its lovely designed 2D animations. Activating autosave is strongly recommended and can be done via the ingame options menu!
Tips:
- Save every mission at the beginning, because your game progress isn't saved in any other way (except autosave). That means if you click on the 'start new capaign' button, you restart the game -- and don't continue where you have stopped.
- There are fan patches availlable on the internet. They fix a lot of bugs.
In total i recommend this game to strategy fans who want to experience combat-focussed missions. Also you will need a lot of time during the missions.
I don't recommend it to strategy fans who like to build up a village and want to focus on economy, because in this game economy has the purpose to support your army and nothing else. But if you think this game could be interesting, just don't wait any longer! Like i said in the beginning: It didn't get enough attention when it was released.
Still the best medieval city-building strategy game ever! Feels and seems better than Banished game, but have a lot of old-school game problems that make the K&M:TPR experience more embarrasing and painful. And major problem of the game - the AI units. Most of your citizens will work to death but never even try to save themselves. The guard AI will not protect your territories without direct control, they not reacting on enemy squads. Well, otherwise it's the wery pleasant game for city-building relaxation some time. You know, it's worth even full price, but use cheats and don't try to be honest with obsolete gameplay, it doesn't worth it.

Only The Peasants Rebellion expansion cheats working in this game, don't try to use The Shattered Kingdom resource combination.
The game is fun and has beautiful animations. However, the slow weapon production tree and the terrible servant pathfinding makes every scenario an endurance challenge that can take 6+ hours to beat.
In order to fix this, get KaM remake community patch, where you can speed up the game (among other QoL improvements). With that option, you can enjoy both the initial building phase and the later fighting phase, without being bogged down by the boring middle "weapon stockpiling" phase.
Knights & Merchants has problems. Enough problems to make the game not enyojable. Fortunately there is solution! kamremake.com - KaM rewriten with great features and less problems.
It's still not the best game in the world but I have no problem with sinking countless amount of hours.
