Relics of adventure gaming history

There's no denying the importance of the early King's Quest titles to the history of graphical adventure games as a whole, but besides wanting to experience a bit of gaming history, there's not much to recommend about these games to newcomers. The first two King's Quest games don't really add much to the lore and all of them suffer from unforgiving gameplay mechanics such as waiting for random encounters to produce critical items, reaching dead-ends without even knowing it, illogical puzzles (the one in the first King's Quest is infamous), ridiculously narrow walkways for you to plummet to your death and inventory items that are not visible on screen or if you "look" around. It makes for an infuriating experience for anyone who weren't brought up on these games and happen to already know the answers. I'd recommend you try the AGD Interactive VGA remakes of the King's Quest games if you really want to experience the lore.

Short & Sweet

This game kicked off the whole series of "Quest" games by Sierra. As others have said, the VGA version is better. The whole series gets better as one moves from start to finish, in my opinion. A real classic, that I highly recommend for people who enjoy adventure games.

A Pack of Classics Showing Their Age

These are the original versions of the first 3 King's Quest games, and I'm glad to have them here. These are venerated classics of the Point-and-Click Adventure genre. I like them a great deal; they have simple, but enjoyable stories, and lovely worlds to explore. My favorite is easily the third game, which eventually allows you your own base of operations, down in a cozy (I think it is, anyway) basement laboratory, not to mention that mixing up the spells is a lot of fun. While these are great for historical curiosity, they are absolute relics; character movement is slow, you have a text parser, and deaths or unwinnable scenarios can come out of nowhere, and you might not even realize that the latter has happened. While I like them, and fans of these really old installments will like them, just know what you're getting yourself into.

Great Classics

These games are brilliant, old though they may be. Even though there are the free remakes, the originals still have their charms, such as the old EGA style graphics or the typed command interface. I really recommend buying these games, however if you do, I also recommend using ScummVM for improved customisation in the games and easier fullscreen and other things.

Can't Beat the Classics

I used to play these three King's Quest titles when I was a kid. I spent many hours trying to solve their fairy tale puzzles. While the graphics aren't even close to today's standards, it doesn't take away from the charm and memories of playing these games. They set the standards for which all adventure games would use and follow.
