Description
Kingdoms and Castles is a game about growing a kingdom from a tiny hamlet to a sprawling city and imposing castle.

Your kingdom must survive a living and dangerous world. Do the viking raiders make off with your villagers? Or are they stopped, full of arrows, at the castle gates? Does a dragon torch your granary, your people dying of starvation in the winter, or are you able to turn the beast back? The success of your kingdom depends solely on your skill as a city and castle planner.

City Design
Layout and expand your town strategically to improve your peasants' happiness and to attract new residents. But make sure to tax them just enough so that you can fund your castle. Make sure your peasants are fed in the winter and healed of plagues. Build churches to keep them from despair and taverns to keep them happy. You can even throw festivals if you've built a town square! Send out wood cutters to collect wood, set up stone quarries to build your castes, and farm the land efficiently so your town can grow and thrive.

Fortify and Defend
The new land you're settling is at risk of viking invasion. These raiders seek to kidnap and kill your peasants, steal your resources, and burn your town to the ground. Use a powerful castle building system to create walls and towers to defend against the viking threat. Castles are constructed using blocks which can be placed anywhere. Towers and walls are dynamically created based on how you stack and arrange them. You can place archer towers and other weapon emplacements, their range is affected by the height of the their tower. The castle building system is very flexible and allows all sorts of castle designs. You can try many different layouts to best protect your kingdom and express your glory and power as a king or queen.

Living World
And it all takes place in a beautiful dynamic world with a stylized procedural cloud system and season cycle from summer to winter. A realistic tree growth algorithm simulates the forests. Depending on your needs, wood cutters can clear cut or responsibly manage your forests.

Not enough.

Is it fun? Yes, for a while. Is it shallow? Yes. I grew up in germany in the 90ies- so I have fond memories of strategic building games, a genre which is kind of dead nowadays. This game kind of fills this niche. But not completely. At first, things seem all fine and well: Some resource chains, military options, good pace, all seems easy enough, not too complex, but it works. You build, keep your citizens happy, fight off vikings and dragons every few years. A short gameplay loop which may last a few hours. Problem is: That is all there is to it. There is no campaign, no story mode, no real trading with other cities, other cultures, no difference in what you do. Both the building system as well as the combat system seem way too shallow for my taste. The combat system is maybe the worst aspect: There are two defensive weapons you can build, 2 different units, and....that's it. No real strategies can be employed here because there is just basically nothing there to work with. This game would profit greatly from different tower and unit types and more agressive and varied enemies. Visuals and sounds are fine enough. I personally really like the abstract, blocky look of the game. Maybe that's the best part of it. In conclusion: For a really cheap price, if you like this stuff, I would still say-yeah,it is serviceable. But I am frustrated by it. Because there could be something great here. Imagine the building aspect, combined with a tower-defense like game with varied enemy types and lots of different towers and units to build. Seems like something that could be awesome. The way it stands, this remains are short, shallow experience that gets old very quickly. Seems almost more like a demo than a full game...

Good game but not very deep.

I really like this game. Everything runs smoothly and pushes you to expand. If you were a fan of SimCity 2000 or any of the other not-so-deep management games, you will like this. If you are looking for something that is deep and difficult, this isn't it. I got all the achievements on my first playthrough. I played on the hardest difficulty (easier map) and never felt as if I could lose. I usually play harder games than this, but it was a nice diversion for a few days. Pros: Easy to get into Nice but simple graphics Gameplay continually moves you forward Balanced expansion Cons: Too easy Basically just build towers to win

Good game

A solidly charming medieval city builder. Starting out with a keep and a few peasants, you expand to build farms, mines, taverns and (of course!) defenses like walls, towers and moats. It's pretty (especially winter's blanket of snow), but unfortunately lacks much depth. Beyond the challenging early game, when you can barely scrape enough food together, it's fairly dull. Late game structures like cathedrals are pointless, while combat is perfunctory. Worth playing, but Stronghold this ain't.

A cute and relaxing game

This game is superb if you take it for what it (in it's current state) is: a sandbox city/castle builder. It's not about achieving something, it's about kicking back and slowly building up. If you have played Lego in your childhood, you will love this game :) One can spend quite some time planning the layout of a new city quarter, or even just picking a beautiful spot for the new cemetery. The world already feels very lively, with your peasants scurrying around and the seasonal weather changes. The game mechanics are actually pretty solid, I really like how they solved resource management and building. It is true however, that once you build up the complete map, there is not much left to do. At my game pace, that can easily take 15h-20h though. But the moment when Dragons are about to overfly your castle walls, not just since GOT a stunning experience :)

Nice little one

Сozy game. Kind of modern version of Caesar 3 etc but much friendlier. Can become boring in short time and also can be very addictive. Me gusta.
