Buy it for potential, or a quick CB fix
As Uzrathixius and others have indicated in their excellent reviews, this game is fun for a few hours, but lacks depth. It is an early effort, and the devs have already released post-release updates adding docks and trade routes, so I am hopeful that they will continue to expand the game. The game is easy to pick up and play,. and very cute, but the lack of RTS-type control over villagers - even to the basic point of assigning professions to specific people - is frustrating and limiting, and the limited number of buildings and focal areas leads to a short fascination with building a little gem of a colony followed by hours of clicking to grow for growth's sake. There needs to be more decision-making, or at least more varied building types, ornamentation, and stuff to do. The threats of vikings and dragons really aren't threats after you reach a certain size and wealth, so at that point you find yourself playing for play's sake. I don't expect too much from a $10 game, and Kingdoms & Castles provides a pleasing aesthetic, great performance, and enough interest to make me feel like my $10 was worth it - it is a great "let's see what I can do in an hour" game, but not much deeper that that. I am hopeful that Lion Shield continues to invest in this game. Between the appealing visuals and structure and the wide-open directions for development - there is a great deal of potential - if they want it.
