Kingdoms and Castles

Playing Normal difficulity. From 5 peasants to almost 3600. Its about 800 years. Autosave no backup, only slot. Vikings and dragon may comes at same time (but not mine: vikings comes 1 year earlier than dragon) Vikings always enlarge themself, i got 35 of their ship on the horizon. 8*2 ogres, each does seems 0.5 dps to wall. Due to game engine, the Unity, fps drop and/or slow movments. (see Cities Skylines, i got 35 fps both on 3900x + 5700XT and 2400G + Vega11.) It (1)pay salary, (2)harvest, (3)weather change, (4)new peasants comes, (5)old one die, (6)auto save, ((7)and vikings dragon comes) all of this happens every year at same point, it may cause the game flash exit, carsh. NOTICE that crash may break autosave. Sad story: Year 733 it carshed but autosave fine then load save and play then do a save, its about year 760 game crash again autosave fine, bad news come nearly year 790 crashed autosave break so i do a time travel back to 733.

A good foundation but could use a few more variation of buildings and units. You can see all the game has to offer in about an hour.

The visuals are great, the animations look cute and the basic economic model works well. What is missing is everything else. Resources and their uses is barely diversified. For example, Food comes as Grains, Apples and Bread but they all turn into generic Food which makes their distinction superfluous. At least when it comes to Bread since there's no information about why I should produce it. Which leads to the most obvious problem: The interface. Although you get to know the building requirements (thankfully), you don't get other important information. The Advisors are barely useful and rather annoying. You don't need to be constantly reminded that you have a food shortage and your peasants are starving when it's obvious that this problem mainly occurs at the early stage of a game, when you're literally working on establishing the food production. It's not like you have anything else to worry about at that stage. The war Advisor is rather useless too. Besides giving forewarnings a tad too late to do anything about it, he has the audacity to say "Good Day" when there's a dragon and seven raider parties shuffling around my city streets. The graphical interface also looks like a WiP. The text is so small that it dissipates on lower resolutions. You're also missing important views, like employment or resource distribution. I could be asking too much from it but the point is, there's nothing much else to do in Kingdoms and Castles than tinker with your own creation. And when you realize that there's barely any depth to be explored, you start wondering about the point of it all. My excitement for Kingdoms and Castles wained off after experiencing the all the main highlights. It is a very shallow city management sandbox game. At least for now. The devs still have a lot to work on. Beyond fixing bugs that should have been fixed long ago, they need to add some depth to this little game, and fast.

Like many reviewers have said, it's an easy game and once your town reaches a decent size with plenty of resources and money, there is not much else to do! Still for $7 it's well worth playing and relaxing for several hours.

Relaxing game with cozy graphics, nice music, and peaceful gameplay (at least until the dragons show up). Keeping the townsfolk happy and healthy is fun and engaging. Several building options, freedom of placement, scattered natural resources, varying soil fertility, all allowing for hours of creative and strategic city building. You can play in peaceful mode with no enemies, or choose a difficulty level to include AI enemies. With enemies enabled, build walls, towers, and military units to protect your people from incoming Vikings and dragons. Lots of fun and hard to walk away. You can save your game and come back to it, never losing progress.
