animated adventure game is good enough

I decided to give this one a go while buying a lot of interplay games thanks to the anniversary sale. Having now played through it I have to say that I did enjoy myself. There are definitely better games to buy first on gog.com but it still satisfied my adventure game urge. Essentially the game mechanics work like this: You go to a location, watch an animation, and then if you have the right item you use it. You also die a lot for going into the wrong play unprepared. The death over and over did annoy me at first as I prefer a game that lets you walk around, explore, and just try things to see what happens. This game gives you three lives before you get a game over although there are spots were you can regain lives. Once I stared to get a hang of it and really listen to the clues things did go much smoother. The animations weren't super great. If you returned to the same spot and there was new information it usually showed you the same animation with a different speaking line put over it. The main problem with the animation is that I don't think it was meant to be shown on big computer screens like we have now. It just gets very pixelated. I know because of the animation people like to compare this to Dragons Lair but really that isn't fair. Dragons Lair was more of an action game were you pressed up, down, left, or right at the correct moment in order to advance to the next room. This game comes across more as an adventure game were you get items to obtain more items and get past obstacles. The length of the games wasn't as long as I would of liked. I didn't keep track of exactly how long it took me, but I did play it over the course of two evenings. In the end I enjoyed myself and I don't feel like my 5 bucks was wasted (one less trip to McDonalds) but if you are an adventure game fan there are a number of better choices to buy first.

    You WANT to Die

There sure are a lot of nay-sayers for this game, but implore you not to listen to them. I've beaten this game numerous times and it's not as hard as people are implying. Yes, you do die a lot, but you're supposed to. Death is part of the game. That's why every death gets its own animation, and most of them are voice-acted! Yes, there are limited lives, but that's what re-loading your save is for (and you should be saving often). Experimenting with scenes that can either kill you or cost you items should be your goal, not something you avoid. But apart from that, everything else in this game is great. The fully-voiced, animated cutscenes that accompany every single area, a gorgeous leitmotif-style soundtrack, and a classic fantasy feel that's sure to give some Lord of the Rings or D&D vibes. This is like a point-and-click adventure version of Dragon's Lair. My only gripe with the game is that some of the voices are hard to understand, but it's a really old game, so that's to be expected.

    Thayer's Quest Mod

Few people may remember Thayer's Quest the coin-op animated adventure. This is a remodeled version changing Thayer to Lathan with new voicework and old animation. I found it quite fun. Unforgiving when it comes to misused spells, though. Keep a look out for Shadoan, the sequel.

    Kingdom : The Near Death

This game is retarded. This game is insane. This game has a decent story, but HOLY JESUS CRAP DO YOU DIE A LOT! There are so many many many ways to die in this game. You step outside and walk down a path? Death by bubble. You walk into town? Death by guards. Go to a lake? Creepy fish people sing to you. Come back? DEATH BY FISH PEOPLE! Go to town? Heal the blind guy. Go back down the same street a second later? Death by guards. Etc etc etc. I you enjoy dying, this will be your game!

A bit cheesy, but I really like it.

Tho I haven't bought this version (I found the old CD rom form my parents), I really like the game. It really gives me nostalgic feelings. Even if it maybe isn't as easy or "comfortable" as other games, various factors really make me like it. (The pre 2000s fantasy style, weird voice acting and rather interesting visual style) I just wonder if this version is easier to play and configure than the old CD Rom version.
