Not the Best, But Solid
Nice solid metroidvania. I played at medium difficulty (there is also an easy difficulty) and the game started off easy and about 2/3 of the way through the game, the difficulty cranked up to about medium I felt. There are "inspirations" you acquire throughout the game which are essentially changeable bonuses which allow you to optimize your character for certain situations, but I coasted about 2/3 of the game on my exploration build without swapping. It took 17 hours to complete with 99% map completion. The game has very good art, a nice soothing atmospheric soundtrack and very good bosses. Regular enemies are ok (well draw, nice to look at with some unique enemies, but many felt similar). The story is intriguing and serviceable, but also confusing at times and sometimes, the writing tried to be poetic, but it felt forced. The controls felt crisp and simple. Beyond the basic attack, you acquire 4 spells, plus a few movements that are classic metroidvania trope. Nothing revolutionary, but all done very well. I appreciated the fact that I found all the attacks (your basic attack and all 4 spells) the game gives you useful against various bosses. I'll mention that the game needlessly stretch some parts at times. The last savepoint before a boss is at times not directly next to the boss and it might take 20 seconds to get to the boss on each attempt which felt like needless filler. Also, you have health potions which are practically never completely full on respawn, so you'll likely have to make an additional detour to fill them somewhere taking perhaps another 20 seconds. Also, you lose some gold coins each time you die and there is no bank. I didn't impact me too much, but if you die a lot while fighting a boss, you might get broke and then have to grind some money to buy stuff. These are things that are likely to impact players who die more often, so how much it impacts you may vary. Overall though, I think this game is a good buy for metroidvania fans.
