Description

One night, in 1987, in the small town of Miami, Arizona, a satanic cult unwittingly summons the ancient evil, Baphomet, catapulting the town into chaos. John, awoken by the kidnapping of his neighbor, sets out into the night to fight back against the demonic invasion and rescue his friends before it's too late...

Take control of John as his adventure leads him through an hour-by-hour experience of what could be everyone's last night on Earth. As John, you will encounter unearthly evils, Demon lords, afflicted townsfolk, high school bullies, and a torrent of engaging, serial-like side stories – all nested in a larger-than-life fantasy that brings the ultimate evil to a neighborhood near you.

Choose your class, customize your abilities, and battle nightmarish creatures as you collect unique gear in order to infiltrate the massive lairs of Demon lords that have taken over the town.

Save Miami

Take down the town’s demons as you get closer to unraveling Baphomet’s grip on Miami. Explore the entire map of the town, interact with a wide cast of NPCs and take on the Demon Generals in the order that you wish.

Choose Your Class

Choose from 5 different classes: Barbarian, Knight, Rogue, Necromancer and Sorcerer. Each class excels differently, providing a unique play style depending on your choice. The class you choose decides your base style, while the skill trees allow for further customization.

Shape Your Character

Skill trees are split into three branches, containing 10 different talents each. As you level up, spend allotted points into any of the three branches of your class. Once you have reached level 10 in your first branch, you are free to cross over into another branch, allowing you to fully customize your play style.

Hoard the Best Gear

Outfit yourself with new equipment via quest rewards, hidden items throughout the town, and scoring random drops from a multi-tiered loot system with variable drop rates. Items range from common to completely unique. The items you collect provide an extra dimension to character stat development and have special abilities that will make you even more powerful.

Co-op With Your Friends

You don’t have to face the forces of darkness by yourself. In Kingdom of Night, either play through the campaign as John alone, or with a friend in local co-op. Team up and synergize different character classes, becoming a torrent of annihilation that the underworld will fear.

an actual(ly awesome) aRPG+

If you've played any so-called aRPG in the past (your Torchlights, Titan Quests or -- indeed -- Diablos); you'll know what to expect from KoN's core gameplay: you explore the map, whack things and collect loot... The difference is, KoN actually has a plot and (admittedly limited, but still) decisions you have to make which -- unlike any of the aforementioned games (which are strictly linear) -- could qualify as "role playing." The control scheme is more action-y, as well, and lets skill (rather than stats) be the determining factor in fights. In Diablo, if you ran into an enemy that is 10+ levels above you, chances are good you would always lose until you level up and find better equipment. Here -- using reflexes and a judicious application of abilities -- you can actually persevere (though the game doesn't exactly make it easy). As you run through the night and gather allies (who actually benefit you), there's a refreshing feeling of progression -- of the world changing thanks to what you have accomplished. And -- okay -- the music is nice and eerie, the 80s vibe pulled off very well (bologna sandwiches, Arnie T-800 posters and all); and the pixel graphics first-rate. As for downsides, I've encountered one bug (where your inventory doesn't render in the "notebook"); that vanishes if you exit the game and restart, some of the dungeon-y maps (like sewers or, of all things, the convenience store) are a bit monotonous and overlong and item variety is limited (four, five hours in you'll have most of your drops memorized). Later in the game, a little stutter can kick in (too many enemies? too much inventory?); but not to an inconvenient degree. All in all -- for a 500mb game -- Kingdom of Night is an impressive little gem and exactly what I hoped it would be. Game lasts about 15 hours and doesn't drop the ball throughout. The writing stays consistent (and fun); new puzzles and challenges keep getting thrown into the mix and -- on the whole -- the story is captivating enough that I didn't mind what few rough edges it had. The game made me want to keep playing and smile. If that's not worth 5 stars, I don't know what is.

Cozy RPG

Solid little RPG with a wide open-ish world. You never feel overwhelmed - it's scaled just right to be something you can sit down and play without feeling you're just running a checklist. Each quest and activity is unique enough to make it feel worthwhile doing, and the rewards for many quests are unique and useful. The graphics are really well done, and the game does have a solid atmosphere that makes you want to continue exploring. The mechanics are simple and the combat system is pretty unique -I enjoyed it as it's fresh as it adds a solid action element. They've opted for traditional class archetypes, but the skill selection system (for magic classes especially) has a nice feel. The leveling system is pretty forgiving (you can respec), and inventory management is not an issue so hoard away; hence the cozy label. Overall it feels like a game made by people who cared about it - it shows in the little world building references and the dialogue especially. Go buy it, you won't regret it.

Nice action RPG

I've really enjoyed playing the game so far, and I'm a little over 7 hours in, and probably halfway through the story. What a blend of influences! You have some teenage mystery solving atmosphere like Stranger Things. The pixel graphics remind me most of old Sierra quests but the animations are really smooth. The game plays like an action RPG, as it should. There are a few classes on offer, focusing on either melee and magic. I went with melee, and boy, it takes me right back to playing Nox (if anyone remembers that Westwood classic). The gameplay loop is fairly repetitive overall, as is perhaps expected with this genre, with focus on dodging and dishing out damage as a melee class. A variety of different monsters and their unique attack styles require to think more often than mash buttons. You find lots of randomly generated loot that have a lot of different kind of stats, but it's really hard to understand what they actually do in terms of gameplay. I built a set of items that gives me close to 70% physical resistance, but the monsters still take a big chunk of my health with every hit. I have another set that gets me a critical hit chance of 40%, but it's unclear I ever score those hits as they aren't really indicated on the screen, and the monsters go down at about the same speed. Aside from that, the plot and characters are all surprisingly interesting, which is nice bonus. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who likes action RPGs and/or horror games.

Nice RPG with interesting story

Surprisingly good game, full of atmosphere and well-written story. Worth the money, just a tad short.
