Game:

You're Henry, the son of a blacksmith. Thrust into a raging civil war, you watch helplessly as invaders storm your village and slaughter your friends and family. Narrowly escaping the brutal attack, you grab your sword to fight back. Avenge the death of your parents and help repel the invading forces!

Story:

Bohemia – located in the heart of Europe, the region is rich in culture, silver, and sprawling castles. The death of its beloved ruler, Emperor Charles IV, has plunged the kingdom into dark times: war, corruption, and discord are tearing this jewel of the Holy Roman Empire apart. One of Charles' sons, Wenceslas, has inherited the crown. Unlike his father, Wenceslas is a naive, self-indulgent, unambitious monarch. His half-brother and King of Hungary, Sigismund the Red Fox, senses weakness in Wenceslas. Feigning good will, Sigismund travels to Bohemia and kidnaps his half-brother. With no king on the throne, Sigismund is now free to plunder Bohemia and seize its riches.

In the midst of this chaos, you're Henry, the son of a blacksmith. Your peaceful life is shattered when a mercenary raid, ordered by King Sigismund himself, burns your village to the ground. By bittersweet fortune, you are one of the few survivors of this massacre.

Without a home, family, or future you end up in the service of Lord Radzig Kobyla, who is forming a resistance against the invasion. Fate drags you into this bloody conflict and shoves you into a raging civil war, where you help fight for the future of Bohemia.
  • Massive realistic open world: Majestic castles, vast fields, all rendered in stunning high-end graphics.
  • Non-linear story: Solve quests in multiple ways, then face the consequences of your decisions.
  • Challenging combat: Distance, stealth, or melee. Choose your weapons and execute dozens of unique combos in battles that are as thrilling as they are merciless.
  • Character development: Improve your skills, earn new perks, and forge and upgrade your equipment.
  • Dynamic world: Your actions influence the reactions of the people around you. Fight, steal, seduce, threaten, persuade, or bribe. It’s all up to you.
  • Historical accuracy: Meet real historical characters and experience the genuine look and feel of medieval Bohemia.

Nigh unplayable waste of potential

At its core this is a solid RPG set in a beautiful and flushed out world that makes it into an exceptional open world game. Along with a charming art style and nice graphics; this game does an excellent job immersing the player. But all of this potential is marred by an abundance of bugs and an abysmal control scheme. The game tries to imitate Mount and Blade in its combat controls but fails completely. Combat is unresponsive, sticky, and ill adapted for multiple opponents. You will find yourself desperately trying to apply what you learn from the games tutorials just to have it all fail as the game fights your efforts to play it. And considering that this is a combat centered game it kind of ruins the whole experience if the combat doesn't work. I simply cannot recommend this game to anyone because they will have their experience ruined by the catastrophic design choices made by the developers, and because of the numerous game breaking bugs strewn about it. Many have also pointed out that the save system is deeply flawed, and while I was prepared to overlook this, I quickly realized that the save system compounded with the aforementioned combat makes for a very frustrating experience. You will find yourself killed by a gang of bandits you weren't able to even defend yourself against and then be set back 30 minutes of gameplay. Very sad to see such a promising title end up like this.

This was a full priced game at launch that had purchasable dlc down the line that still has game breaking issues. Done trying to play the game that does not want to be played.

I hate this game with a passion !!!

Now, I need to explain my review. This game is incredibly beautiful. The story is well written and emotional, it has an incredible amount of backstory and history, WOW!!!!! Doesn´t that sound like a great game? I don´t think so. The difficulty is of play is off the charts by a mile. It begins easy enough and you get to like the characters a lot, Then, all of a sudden, almost at the beggining, the village is attacked and you have to run away on your horse with, at least 3 soldiers shooting arrows at you. The horror of it is that the archers following you hardly ever miss, and they shoot an arrow every 2 seconds. Your horse gets tired very quickly, and you die bleeding before you finish your run of almost 50 miles long. If you make it past the first 5 miles, don´t worry, you will die in the next 5 miles. The only way to play this game is by using a cheat or you´ll spenf the rest of your life trying to get anywhere in the story. There is no gamer with the ability to run away other than to run your horse forward. I don´t understand programmers that make such horribly difficult games. I guess they are funny that way. Sorry boys, I fell for it, but you´ll never get me to buy another game from you. I play games to be entertained, not to end my session with a headache wishing to throw my shoes at the screen

Horrible combat

Combat is beyond frustating when there even 2 eneimies at once. However you can get OP quick then combat is too easy and boring. There are also those lame combos that never work.

One of very few masterpieces out there

If you are a whiner you might not like this game. Sissy players who don't remember hardcore game times which were actually better will have too many complaints to ever enjoy such masterpiece as KCD is. They will complain about 0,1% of the game being bugged and still not patched at the release date. They will complain about being completely unskilled at the beginning. They will whine that combat is ridiculously hard if you've never invested actual effort to learn the techniques like in real life. They will complain that saving is not just granted anytime in unlimited fashion and you have to actually be vary and not lazy save scum. They will brag about this and that probably all that it is way too realistic and not too gamy. They will probably miss all the unique details you've never seen in any game before. They will not appreciate extremely developed dialogues written in the most believable style I've ever encountered in a game (wait I just remembered Fallout 2). They will not make it deep enough to be completely devoured by the world's beauty and realistic graphical style almost matching the nature of Vanishing of Ethan Carter. They will not enjoy that cliche simplified game mechanics have been replaced by more complex and more difficult real-life rewarding mechanics. Well you got the point already. One detail annoyed me heavily though. The voiceover is way too often quite different in meaning compared to written text in original Czech. It is the biggest shame and huge middle finger raised to Czech and Slovak players this game "could not afford" decent voiceover from among-the-best dubbers in Europe... surprisingly from the same country where this game is situated AND developed. Witcher 3 stays proud. I am Slovak and I would actually buy the game if not for the middle finger. And I WILL buy it if the middle finger is replaced by handshake from the devs.
