Game:

You're Henry, the son of a blacksmith. Thrust into a raging civil war, you watch helplessly as invaders storm your village and slaughter your friends and family. Narrowly escaping the brutal attack, you grab your sword to fight back. Avenge the death of your parents and help repel the invading forces!

Story:

Bohemia – located in the heart of Europe, the region is rich in culture, silver, and sprawling castles. The death of its beloved ruler, Emperor Charles IV, has plunged the kingdom into dark times: war, corruption, and discord are tearing this jewel of the Holy Roman Empire apart. One of Charles' sons, Wenceslas, has inherited the crown. Unlike his father, Wenceslas is a naive, self-indulgent, unambitious monarch. His half-brother and King of Hungary, Sigismund the Red Fox, senses weakness in Wenceslas. Feigning good will, Sigismund travels to Bohemia and kidnaps his half-brother. With no king on the throne, Sigismund is now free to plunder Bohemia and seize its riches.

In the midst of this chaos, you're Henry, the son of a blacksmith. Your peaceful life is shattered when a mercenary raid, ordered by King Sigismund himself, burns your village to the ground. By bittersweet fortune, you are one of the few survivors of this massacre.

Without a home, family, or future you end up in the service of Lord Radzig Kobyla, who is forming a resistance against the invasion. Fate drags you into this bloody conflict and shoves you into a raging civil war, where you help fight for the future of Bohemia.
  • Massive realistic open world: Majestic castles, vast fields, all rendered in stunning high-end graphics.
  • Non-linear story: Solve quests in multiple ways, then face the consequences of your decisions.
  • Challenging combat: Distance, stealth, or melee. Choose your weapons and execute dozens of unique combos in battles that are as thrilling as they are merciless.
  • Character development: Improve your skills, earn new perks, and forge and upgrade your equipment.
  • Dynamic world: Your actions influence the reactions of the people around you. Fight, steal, seduce, threaten, persuade, or bribe. It’s all up to you.
  • Historical accuracy: Meet real historical characters and experience the genuine look and feel of medieval Bohemia.

Numerous Bugs and Poor Implementation

Overall, the game is pretty good, probably 4/5. The problem comes from systems that simply don't work the way they should. For instance, while messing around I tried to see if I could stealthily kill everyone in Skalitz. After taking out several people without getting a bounty, I was seen and got a bounty, so I reloaded...and my last save from awhile before also had a bounty but it didn't when I had saved. I tried the unlimited saves mod to spam saves along the way and see what was going on, sometimes I could go back half a dozen saves or even all of the allowed saves and would still have a bounty added, in spite of not having one when the save was made. Something is off in how corpses and proximity to them and sightlines all play together on game load. What's more, even in just the starting area there are broken quests. I can't attempt the one where you throw crap at the house in the tutorial because as soon as the wife walks off, the game saves, and then it locks in the next loading screen. This essentially bricks my entire playthrough to that point (which is only the tutorial, but still). This is just a couple examples of my experience with the game. I haven't made it far, only reaching Rattay and dabbling a bit, but the more I play and don't experience a buggy mess, the more the game just seems needlessly obtuse for the sake of being obtuse. In the game's current state, I recommend it only to sadists. If the bugs and such get fixed (even if just by the modding community), then it could be a good game for the most obsessive/hardcore crowd. Outside of that, I can't recommend this game to anyone.

A Great Game, with some flaws, but also a broken one

KCD is a great RPG with some flaws, like the stealh system, the food/hunger design, some of the side content like the "activities" that are only a sort of "fetch nonsensical robbery quesst", the combat system when you have to face more than one o two enemies at time, the poorly ammount of situations on when the game lets you to fight or stealth, or, in other words, this is the most walking simulatr RPG of all times (and that happens both in the main and side misions, and even in the travels or exploration......), the low difficulty for a game that pretends to be a simulator or hardcore (i¡ve only dead 4 times in 80 hours and that is becasue the game broke himself very early, at the moment that you do a couple of "bandit's camps".because at that moment, .both the equiptment and the economy systems of the game will be broken , and, that is something that can happen in the first hours of the game......). But , beside all of that, the the game is excelent in some other areas like: the ambientation, the plot, the main character, the inmersion, the recreation of the enviornment, his OST, the archery sistem, the main and the sidequest missions (not the activities), the cgis (its like you are watching braveheart or something like that), and all of that facts, toghether, make you to forget all of his flaws, but unfortunatly there is something that no one can skip...and that is a broken game, and yes, that is the case: the game is poorly optimized, and has A LOT of sttutering and even frequently freezing moments in cities (because the game colpases ONE of your cores randomly, a bug that has been here since day one and they HAVEN'T patch yet ¬¬'), and of course all of the bugged missions that can guide you to a dead end.........etc etc. So, If the game wasn't broken, i would give him maybe a 4,5 out of 5 (for all the flaws i've said before), but in his actual state (post 1.4 patch), the game is still broken, and i can't recomend ir, nor praise it.

Buy it on a big sale

KCD does many things, but does very few of them well. This game is more analogous to the Assassin's Creed franchise than it is to a game like Skyrim. There is a lot of content in this game, but very little of it is fully fleshed out. This game came out in 2018. I am writing this in 2025. This game still has game breaking bugs. Quests glitching. NPC's that have omnipresence and will know every action you do regardless of whether anyone is around. Without looking up proper dialogue options in certain quests, you will lose reputation. If you choose to do a playthrough without prior knowledge of dialogue options, you will find yourself reloading your save constantly to get the best outcome, because seemingly innocent dialogue choices will cause you to lose your reputation (even if the context of that dialogue is alone between your character and a murderer you chase down). Quests are also bugged and must be done in certain orders and without informing you, some quests will be timed and if you fail to complete them within a certain time frame, you will fail and have to reload your last save. This would not be a problem if the game informed you of these time-gated quests, but it doesn't. There are quests you can start and choose to finish tens of hours into your playthrough, but you will have no way of knowing which is which. Combat is interesting at first, but then just becomes a matter of who has the bigger stat stick. Using a bow is only viable for hunting, because unlike the melee weapons the bow gives no perks. If you like playing archer builds, this is not the game for you because it is nearly impossible in certain fights. TLDR: The game has a "correct" way to play and the only way to get that "correct" way to play is to either play through it before or play through it with a walkthrough. It does not respect your time, and lacks A LOT of QoL that you would expect a game of this caliber to have.

so much promise

Such a great idea held back by questionable game design and game breaking bugs. The game starts really slow, you really don't have any freedom until Rattay, There are also a lot of cutscenes these are by no means bad but I feel there are to many spaced to close to each other. the targeting in this game is fustrating but after a while you learn to work with it. You also start with no skills, no really it feels like every NPC can pull off large chains of attacks where as your character is still winding up a strike. Once you get some experiance (both in game through training and with the controls) combat is a thrill and pulling off your own combos is highly rewarding.
