Description
Kenshi is an open world, squad based sandbox RPG set in a brutal sword-punk wasteland. Gameplay is open-ended rather than a linear story, so you can play as a settler, a trader, a thief, a rebel, a warlord, an adventurer, a farmer, a slave... or just food for the cannibals.

But first things first, you need to survive. Train your men up from puny victims to master warriors, carry your wounded squad mates to safety and get them all home alive. You are not the chosen one, you’re not great and powerful, you don’t have more ‘hitpoints’ than everyone else and you are not special. Unless you work for it.
  • Customise a solo character or a whole squad and train them from puny victims to master warriors
  • Survive in an unrelenting world of slavers, cannibals, wild beasts and famine. Nowhere is safe.
  • Build your own fortress, research technologies, craft your own gear and wage war with other factions
  • Explore and scavenge the uncharted lands of one of the largest single player open world maps to date
  • Absolutely no level-scaling. The world does not level up along with you and the game won't hold your hand.

Waste of your time

Yeah, we get it, it's "a sandbox". But when the sole dev chose to reinvent the wheel with the UI, THE UI NEEDS TO BE EXPLAINED. And I don't mean the popups that are constantly blocking part of your view. Recruit people. HOW? Gather food. HOW? Learn to "git gud" at combat. HOW?? The interface is constantly pushing you to "build buildings" but you have no idea what the buildings would be for or how to build them. I have a staff in my inventory but no idea how to equip it or use it. How does combat work? NO IDEA. You're told to "click the 'Defend' button to defend but you won't ever attack". That's the sum total of information about how combat works! An alleged "Tutorial" only tells you that combat is nearly always fatal, you should never go out in the desert alone. The vast majority of NPCs are completely non-interactive. Of the very few that are, a minority have dialog and want four digit money to join you--many times the money you have. Okay, so how do you get money? NO IDEA. The UI keeps warning you about hunger. Okay, where do I get food? NO IDEA. I see a bartender has food for sale, so I buy some. Now I'm completely broke. The food sits in my inventory. How do I eat it? NO IDEA. I wander into the desert anyway. The cursor changes over a pile of rocks. I click. My character is now pounding the ground with a pickaxe. Am I harvesting some kind of resource? NO IDEA. Nothing is spilling out on the ground. Nothing is added to my inventory. After two hours of screwing around with this nonsense I uninstalled the game and will probably never touch it again. If you want people to play your game and choose to use a non-standard interface, YOU HAVE TO EXPLAIN HOW THE GAME IS PLAYED. Don't make the brain-dead excuse that "it's a sandbox". Leaving your players clueless and wandering around aimlessly... that's not what "sandbox" means. This is a proof-of-concept project you give out to friends. Not something you CHARGE MONEY FOR and pretend it's a game.

An unfinished, buggy, boring experience.

The dev had some interesting ideas I'll give them that. The limb damage system had potential, some of the crafting mechanics are inspired, the very few RPG elements that exist are ok, and the character creation is nice. That said Kenshi is just not fun to play. There's no story, no quests, no real point to anything really. This is one of those "make your own fun" games which most people use as an excuse for the developer who was too lazy or too inept to actually design a proper video game. You should also be aware that most of these "masterpiece" perfect scores are people parroting their favorite youtuber shill's opinions. No one who's played another video game in their life will award a 5/5 rating to a game where you spend at least 15 minutes real time running between locations in an empty world only to occasionally stumble across bandits who auto detect you from miles away and chase you until you die. That's not good game design and you'd have to be smoking meth to think otherwise. It's also worth mentioning that the combat system is also terribly boring and not fleshed out in the least. It's just click on an enemy and watch your character flail around for five to ten minutes until the enemy dies. The various stances do nothing and several don't work properly, in fact there's several popular mods on the nexus to fix what the dev never did. If you lose an encounter you are knocked unconscious and must wait at least five real time minutes for your character to finally wake up while enjoying the view of multiple NPC's stopping to loot your body and steal all of your belongs. This is your average Kenshi experience. If that somehow seems interesting to you then go for it but I think your time would be much better spent playing good games that weren't abandoned.

Woke.

The game is woke. If you don't like that kind of stuff in your games' stories, then don't bother with this one.

Great game they ruined on purpose

This one is a half finished game they stole from me full of glitches (they put into the game on purpose) and to get the other half of the game you have to download a bunch of bugged "mods" which were supposed to be part of the original game. Horrible people ruined one of my favorite games and there is no other game that is of similar design. I can't even enjoy being alone playing a single player game without being harrassed by theft, rape in my entertainment, and all sorts of things too many to list.

Still very early build

Reviewed 6th of August 2016 First thing is that this game is a point and click RPG. That means you do not use the "WASD" keys to move instead you click on the screen (like classic RPGs), thought I'd mention that since the screen shots make it look more like Witcher 3 type game play. This is not a issue I have with the game just letting people know. At this stage of development I wouldn't recommend this game for the price. Here are a few things I ran into within 10 mins of starting the game: The AI doesn't seem to be ready for even a beta (maybe an alpha build). Enemy AI followed me for about 2 mins before I gave up and just got knocked out. Either their agro range is huge or they follow until you loose or win the fight. Town guards just watched me get beat down and only when I was knocked out did they attack the bandits who attacked me. The world is very barren, apart from the starting town and the odd hut, that's all I saw while running around there was basically nothing else (an odd mining node or two). Controls felt very clunky. You can't angle the camera up to look at the night sky or up a hill as it appears to lock at 90 degrees to the ground (although you can look down). Clicking on objects was a bit hit or miss, with the detection box on objects seemly not matching the models, e.g. clicking on a human only works if you click the chest but not the hands or feet. The main issue I had with the game is that it's very empty and has no direction or purpose. A sandbox game is all well and good (I loved Mountain Blade) but without anything to do in it but look at your stats go up from running, it gets boring fast. Game has promise but not worth the asking price at the time of writing this review.
