In their struggle to survive, lives and destinies intertwine. Philip the monk becomes prior of the small abbey of Kingsbridge. At the same time, a boy called Jack is raised in the woods by his outlawed mother. His apprenticeship as a stonemason paves his way to become a gifted master builder. Together with the disgraced noblewoman Aliena, Jack and Philip begin the construction of one of the greatest cathedrals England will ever see.

Christian themes are respectfully done

Puts the player in the sandals of some down-trodden people in a rough time. You feel your characters buffeted by the whims of local power brokers as you try to decide who you can help while keeping your characters and their families alive. Some of the dialogue delivery is a bit slow (in a technical sense--maybe characters waiting for animations to complete before delivering a line?). But there's a refreshing lack of "filler talk". What's said is all that's needed to drive the story further and the puzzles won't leave you hung up or needing a hint guide. The historic fictional story treats Christian characters as individuals rather than a monolithic organization, and allows you to immerse yourself in the time. Would recommend this but a heads up for Linux users that I did have to play with LD_LIBRARY_PATH a bit to get this thing running.

Marvelous game

Every time i started it i was stunned by it's graphics - beautiful landscapes and characters. Words can't give it proper credit! All 3 books are just amazing - and GOG should update the description!

For everyone who likes a great story

I was so positively surprised at this game. The theme and setting are not something i would normally go for, but i am happy i did! The art style is beautiful and suits the story very well. The voice acting is great and it is a both a grand and a small tale at the same time. There a several surprises and twists along the way and you truly get to care for the characters. With all that being said you need to know, that this is first and foremost an interactive story. The only "gameplay" is a few QT events and then of course you get to choose dialogue options. But if this is something for you, i fully recommend that you experience this tale.

Beautiful game and great story

Daedalic Entertainmen has a bad reputation at the moment, because of that Gollum game. Many people hating on them have never played their games. Daedalic used to make beautiful adventure games in the style of Lucasarts. Pillars of the Earth is probably their best game. It's an adaptation of the novel that takes place in the 12th century England. It's a story that spans years. Daedalic has adapted the story masterfully. It's beautiful to look at, the music and voice acting is good and the game balances the story well with adventure game genre tropes. This game has one of my all time favorite story moments: it involves a priest losing his religion. Beautifully written, beautifully directed, beautifully played. I definitely reccommend this game if you like story games, history and adventure games. This is the genre at it's best.

One of the best stories ever told.

This might be more an interactive novel than an actual point-and-click adventure, but don't let that misguide you: Ken Follett's Pillars of the Earth is for me one of the best games in recent years. Everything about it - the atmospheric music, the painted backgrounds and artstyle, even the voice acting - collaborate to accent the gripping story that is the centerpiece of this experience, all revolving around a small village in England in the 12th century and the lives, past and present, of the characters that are for one reason or another attracted to it. You will control three of them in different times - Philip the monk, Jack the outlaw and Aliena the lady, and through their actions you will write much more than their fate. I was in tears when I reached the end of this journey, and not many games (or books) have managed to accomplish this feat on myself. I knew Daedalic from their Deponia series, but I honestly believe that they really have outdone themselves with this title. I would recommend this to any adventure game fan, especially those who have an interest in realistic representations of the Middle Ages. 10/10
