Donate to any Wildlife Charity
This is a game in the same vein as Dwarf Fortress, Shattered Pixel Dungeon, or Wesnoth. It's a passion project. You can really tell the Dev put a lot of love into this. At the same time, he focused on the fun parts of game dev ("You know what would be really fun? ...") over things like graphics and a user interface. Even with the tutorial and guides, it can be hard to get a solid grip on how the game works. The source code is free under GPL license (minus music, sounds, certain tiles), but it's worth the full $20. And get this: If you donate at least $20 to any Wildlife Charity, and email the dev, he'll send you a key (a quick search online will get you his email). As for the game itself: You build a base, hire workers and soldiers, keep them happy, and send them to raid nearby settlements. Raiding gets you loot and technology, which you can use to further build up your base and army. In turn, other factions will try and raid you. You don't have to be a "villainous mage"; You can be a white knight, a necromancer, a band of dwarves... It's also got a passionate community, and is pretty straightforward to mod. Expect lots of content, with lots more to come. There is some jank, and I could see some people getting frustrated. If you're on the fence, try the Open Source version. But this dev... free open source, active in the community, implementing suggestions, AND supporting Wildlife Conservation? That's five stars in my book.
