    A retro roguelike dungeon simulator

KeeperRL combines classic dungeon simulator gameplay with roguelike and RPG elements. As an evil keeper you will dig out and construct a dungeon and recruit malicious minions to help do your bidding. You’ll train and equip them and take up the fight with the forces of good around you.

Engage in combat and take direct control of your minions and in true roguelike fashion fight tactical battles in a simultaneous turn-based manner. When you make a move, your enemies also move.

    Dungeon management

Dig deep into the mountain and establish a great dungeon to fit the needs of you and your minions. Ensure there’s sleeping quarters, training rooms and crafting stations and decorations. Make sure your dungeon is defensible against invaders using traps, guard areas and choke points.

    Multiple playable factions

Master up to 9 unique factions and their respective keepers. Play as a Dark Wizard mastering the art of black magic, a Necromancer forging an army of undead or play as a Goblin King, leading a horde of greenskins on a quest to find the lost goblin matrons. Your choice of faction will impact gameplay and the style of your dungeon.

    Roguelike

The world is procedurally generated and simulated on a very detailed level. Creatures use equipment and consumable items. There are dozens of special items, spells, attributes and special attacks. Cut off the heads and limbs and blind or poison your enemies in combat and if you’re not careful your enemies can do the same to you. If your Keeper dies it’s game over and you’ll have to start over again so consider your tactics carefully.

Quickly get your dungeon going and go on your first raid, but the game continues to reveal more depth the longer you play and manage to stay alive.

    Explore and expand

Explore the world around you through a large world map with dangerous locations to raid and pillage for loot and infamy as other factions might attempt to raid your dungeon if you fail to defeat them.

You’ll also explore the mountain you’ve built your dungeon in as you can come across precious resources, treasures or dangerous perils above and below you.

    Multiple floors

Expand your dungeon and dig tunnels and rooms in both vertical directions as KeeperRL supports many Z-levels.

    Donate to any Wildlife Charity

This is a game in the same vein as Dwarf Fortress, Shattered Pixel Dungeon, or Wesnoth. It's a passion project. You can really tell the Dev put a lot of love into this. At the same time, he focused on the fun parts of game dev ("You know what would be really fun? ...") over things like graphics and a user interface. Even with the tutorial and guides, it can be hard to get a solid grip on how the game works. The source code is free under GPL license (minus music, sounds, certain tiles), but it's worth the full $20. And get this: If you donate at least $20 to any Wildlife Charity, and email the dev, he'll send you a key (a quick search online will get you his email). As for the game itself: You build a base, hire workers and soldiers, keep them happy, and send them to raid nearby settlements. Raiding gets you loot and technology, which you can use to further build up your base and army. In turn, other factions will try and raid you. You don't have to be a "villainous mage"; You can be a white knight, a necromancer, a band of dwarves... It's also got a passionate community, and is pretty straightforward to mod. Expect lots of content, with lots more to come. There is some jank, and I could see some people getting frustrated. If you're on the fence, try the Open Source version. But this dev... free open source, active in the community, implementing suggestions, AND supporting Wildlife Conservation? That's five stars in my book.

    Very nice, simpler Dwarf Fortress

TL;DR very good, slightly simplified Dwarf Fortress-like, just like the words I wrote in the title. KeeperRL is like Dwarf Fortress with less complicated economy/survival mechanics and a focus on conquest. In the default mode, you start with one keeper (if he dies, you lose, and no save scumming) and a few easily-replaceable workers. You still have to get gold, wood, several tiers of ore, and a lot of equipment for each fighting unit you hire, but gold is obtained by raiding and killing enemy strongholds, defending against attacks, or digging for it--you can dig infinitely up a mountain, or down as in Dwarf Fortress. There's no economy, though there are shops you can discover and buy (or pillage) various items from. Survival is less about meeting food/water needs and more about building and upgrading to accommodate the units you want, so that your zombies and goblins can appreciate the carpeting; if they don't have carpeting to appreciate, they won't fight as well. You also level your Keeper, separately from combat levels (which increase a unit's base stats), and learn, in any order you choose, 19 or 20 different skills which allow more magic or new buildings to be built, which in turn let you recruit better units or craft better gear. These levels are gained only when you fully conquer an area on the map or defend against an attack. There are also multiple modes which play completely differently; I've described just the default mode. You can be a necromancer, or an adventurer with no base, and more, as well as download other players' dungeons and try to raid them. The UI is somewhat complex at first, but also simpler than Dwarf Fortress, and the tutorial explains it pretty well. Google answered most other questions I had. Overall have gotten a lot of time out of it and still enjoying a lot.

This game get me through covid

Come back to show support to dev's long time dedication to free and open source game creation. The freely available ASCII version is a good enough time sink. Life goes on too with genius devs of Electric Succubi, we wish you all the best in your future endeavours.
