Tight action game for chumps and gods
Katana ZERO is great at pushing you to become more flashy and stylish. You WANT that perfect run, with the soundtrack pushing you to go faster and faster through each encounter. You're encouraged to be as aggressive as possible, and the moment-to-moment gameplay is so tight that it's always your fault for dying. The generous slow-mo allows for complex actions / timings to be taken easily when you're still new to the game, and the tight timings and multiple paths through levels create a high skill ceiling that is great to master. The initial campaign is a little easy (coming from someone who is notoriously bad at games), but Hard Mode really steps up the challenge and ensures you perfect the mechanics. The controls are also super simple, which makes it a dream to play on keyboards (I really do suck at games). That being said, the story is lacking. Pre-dlc release (which will be free), it presents you with a lot of questions and strange hallucinations, but seems content to not answer anything yet. Also, there are a lot of times where the story presents a choice, but it doesn't seem to change anything meaningful in the game, except for a single secret. It has potential, and only sometimes breaks the flow of gameplay, and the devs included plenty of options to cut it down or remove it entirely, if it truly bothers you. Overall, great game. Highly polished gameplay with plenty of saftey nets if you suck, whilst retaining plenty of potential to really stretch your legs when you're ready.
