A poor representation of Kao 1

For this price this collection seems pretty good. A set of three okay to decent B-tier 3D platformers. Round 2 is the remaster released on Steam some time ago. But the devil lies in the first and third game. Kao the Kangaroo's digital release is worse than the retail release. Like retail version it does not support widescreen properly and accepted no inputs from my Xbox One gamepad. What's new in digital release is fullscreen mode being completely broken. Instead of the game rendering at, well, full screen it instead uses windowed mode and changes desktop resolution to match the window. The game also still uses tank controls (like retail PC version) instead of analog controls from Dreamcast port. And because there is no launcher and and no way to change graphic settings in-game, you have to fiddle with an .ini file to change settings. The core game is fine, but I'd rather use my retail copy. By comparison Kao: Mystery of Volcano fares slightly better. Fullscreen mode works (yay?), gamepad works, but it still has its issues from retail version. No proper widescreen support, diagonal movement doesn't work properly on my gamepad, slowing Kao down instead of keeping the speed, and the whole game is more of an expansion to Round 2 than a standalone sequel, lasting for only 2 hours. And English translation is terrible, if you're an English speaker go use the fan translation instead. I'm leaving Kao: Round 2 as last, because I have the least amount of things to say about it. It's easily the best game in the trilogy, but still feels pretty average and after the first world it tends to bore and drag on. Game still stretches on widescreen and has no content from PSP version. Overall, the first game has technical issues not seen in retail version, the second game you probably already own on Steam after multiple giveaways and the third game is a short expansion of the second game. It makes this collection difficult to recommend to a fan of 3D platformers.

The Kangaroo that keeps on hopping

An absolute no-brainer tbh, Game was part of my childhood back then on our families Home PC and it hasn't lost any of its charm. At 6 bucks for all 3 games and no DRM makes this a beautiful re-release for modern and older hardware.

Please fix these

No-one wants to play games stuck in windowed mode and with no controller support. Kao 3 has controller support but it's completely broken, you can't even move properly, and these games just don't feel good at all to play with a keyboard. I can play Kao 1 on Dreamcast and Kao 2 on Gamecube, but there is literally no way other than this collection to play Kao 3, which is unfortunate. I just can't play it like this.

A beautful classic but no love for GOG

Loved Kao Round 2 on steam but this fine deal for the Trilogy I couldn't pass on. Works and plays great with an Xbox Series X controller, Only tiny issue is I wish it had the achievements like the re-release on steam.

Long live Kao!

I must admit that, even though platformers are my favorite genre, I didn't know Kao the Kangaroo until "Round 2" was (re)released in Steam. I watched by chance it's trailer and decided to buy it. As I played, it soon became one of my favorite platformers. I really wanted to play the other Kao games, but they were not available. It's difficult to describe the happiness I felt when I found the complete trilogy here. Now, speaking about the games: Kao the Kangaroo, the first one, is a very good platformer. There are many levels, with very different scenarios: snow, desert, sea, ship, harbor, Greece, space, island... Many levels also involve Kao using plenty of vehicles: hang glider, boat, water scooter, space ship, even an alligator! There are also plenty of different enemies and some pretty good bosses. Some have criticized the "tank controls" of the game, but I find this a little unfair. While the modern controls are slightly better, the game is perfectly playable, specially if you like older games. Kao the Kangaroo: Round 2 is my favorite. It improves almost all aspects of the first one: combat, platforming, vehicles, bosses. Again we have plenty of different levels, some with very unique gameplays. There is also a simple but cute story about Kao helping free the imprisoned animals. As mentioned, it became one of my favorite platformers. Kao the Kangaroo: The Mystery of the Volcano, is usually considered the worst. While I must admit it's the weakest of all three, it also has it's positive points. Unlike the other two, this one is set entirely on an island, Kao having to save his pelican friend who fell in a volcano. He is helped by a rather clumsy shaman and has to find 4 artefacts. In terms of gameplay, it's amost identical to round 2. While the levels are less diverse, there are some good additions: a parachute, a virtual reality race and an airplane battle. Overall, I am extremelly thankful to Tate Multimedia and GOG for bringing back Kao!
