I can appreciate what they were trying to do here, but ten bucks for a game that's been done a bunch of times already is too much. It's not original and the voice acting is stiff. I had a friend who owned this pull it up on his computer so I could try, and I wasn't impressed. A little longer, better voice acting and some more personal twists to make this stand out more would have helped. I hope these guys don't give up and produce more, because there is promise, but this product isn't where they will make a name for themselves.
+ the graphics are rather nice
- only a few good jokes
- most of the "puzzles" are pure trial and error "use A with B for no apparent reason" kinda type (though there usually aren't that many possibilities, so it's not very frustrating)
- neither the plot nor the characters are interesting enough to get me involved
I enjoyed this game. It even touched me in one moment. The plot got me interested. I liked graphic - it is simple for current standards but it is colorful and sceneries are quite likable. Nice voice acting. Gameplay is mixed - some actions are logical, some not. Definitely the way interactions with points of interest is made is the biggest pitfall. It is easy to miss items, spots or even locations. Some spots obscure another. It makes game frustrating. Build in highlighting points of interaction do not work correctly. Generally it is rather low budget game but still it delivered fun for me.
Game is long for an adventure. It may be about 10 hours.
Having loved the genre, but hating most of what is made in it, I'm always on the lookout for anything half-decent. And Jack Keane being a modern comedic point & click game, it seemed halfway decent in the very least.
Sadly, it's an example of what not to do in a point &click game.
I shouldn't be surprised or disappointed, but the intro to this game got me so excited to play it, I'm saddened at how little effort went into this game (or rather interactive movie).
First of all, the visuals. The visuals are decent enough, but for some reason everything is so flush with light, the screen is practically glowing, making it hard to look at it.
And although the animation is good enough to be passable, I wish it was better. Talking with various people throughout the game, I felt like I was talking to mannequins.
As for dialogue, there isn't much. You're very limited in what you can say or do, and the character's responses to a lot of what you do are generic ("I don't think that will work").
You can observe things in your surroundings, but it adds nothing to the game. You can speak with people, but that adds nothing to the game, besides bluntly telling you what to do next & trying very poorly to make you laugh.
Not that you need that - each area is so small and confined, you don't have that many choices to begin with. And also what needs to be done is fairly straightforward. The only problem is figuring out the unintuitive way in which the game's creators want you to go about it.
As for dubbing, it goes from being either lifeless to an over-the-top stereotype, causing me to skip most of the dialogue.
But what really got me was the technical side. The game has very poor click recognition, and small & weirdly placed hotspots which drove me up the wall. It made going from point A to B a chore. It doesn't help that the character's walk is so slow, I forced him to run from place to place, causing more bad click recognition.
And the game having crashed on me doesn't help either.
Nice game reminding of old style pulp or dime novels: exotic locations and people, weird science, dastardly villains and bold heroes. And with a touch of (hit and miss humor). The art style doesn't seem to get old and the game looks surprisingly well even after nearly 20 years from release.
Puzzles require kind of specific logic but are generally fairly easy. Some bonus actions unlocking bonus materials are a nice addition too.
The 2 main problems I can see with the game are: little diversity of comments when you're using objects (try to listen "it doesn't work" over and over and not go crazy) and the game doesn't like Alt-Tabbing. Just don't do it and if you have to, save game often afterwards as the game may crash after several minutes.
